lathe-jam-chucks Types of lathe chucks. Machine machines are apparatuses that turn squares of material as grating or slicing devices are applied to the material. Regularly used to shape objects with rotational evenness, machines are utilized on wood, metal and other normal development materials.  Jam Chuck - Just what it sounds like, you jam the piece to be turned into or onto it. Often user made o. Continue Reading. Four jaw chuck - Most common these days is the scroll or self-centering four jaw chuck. Homemade 4-jaw lathe chuck and faceplate. New headstock. I wanted to try making a wooden four-jaw chuck for my lathe. My plan all along was that the four jaw chuck would be permanently attached to a drive shaft, which I'd swap into the lathe when I needed to use the chuck. But I wanted this drive shaft to be a bit thicker to have more support for bowl turning, so I used some 16 mm polished steel rod that I had lying around. Single-key chucks offer the advantage of one-hand operation without the necessity of locking the lathe spindle. One-hand tightening or loosening leaves the other hand free to control stock when mounting it or a finished piece when removing it from the chuck. The chuck jaws attach to the jaw slides with machine screws, allowing the use of a wide variety of specialized accessory jaws. Jaw Design. There are two basic jaw designs, dovetail and serrated, as shown below. Try as you might, it is hard to hold the tap centered exactly on the axis of the hole. At this point touch up the rim of the jam chuck to make sure it is running true and face off the front of the jam chuck so the face is true and flat to the axis of the lathe. The jam chuck is perhaps the cheapest, yet most useful and versatile accessory for your wood lathe. Think of a jam chuck as one end of a reversed wood bowl sandwich, with the other end being anchored by the tailstock. I ran the lathe jam chucks all the way through lathe jam chucks MDF rather than lathe jam chucks to reverse the tap to remove it.

For the best bond, let both surfaces set up tack, and then lay the inverted chuck on the disk, as shown here. Finally, wrap masking tape fully around the perimeter of the chuck, applying it in a clockwise fashion facing the front of the chuck. Note that sometimes the neoprene facing will spring up out of the concavity.

A great use for this jam chuck is re-truing and finishing up rough-turned bowls that have been set aside to dry for 6 months or so, warping in the process. Begin by pressing the warped bowl against the chuck with the tail center located in the original tenon divot. Rotate the bowl by hand and, using the tool rest as a reference, center the bowl between its two widest points, as shown.

Secure the setup with the tail center, and turn the tenon and outside of the bowl concentric. Finally, invert it once more, and finish off the bottom as desired, turning the tenon to a small enough diameter that it can be easily chiseled off once dismounted from the lathe.

All the same, check for any bounce when laying the shaft of a turning tool on the edge of a rotating vessel. Then turn away the tenon to complete the piece. Pressing the blank against the chuck with the tail center, turn the mounting tenon and underside of the plate as shown.

Invert one last time, and finish off the bottom. You must be logged in to write a comment. Log In. Find a Store. My Account. My Cart. Go to Home Page. Mobile Navigation.
