IWhen looking above at a plane flying miles above your head, you'll usually notice that the plane (or jet) is leaving a trail of white smoke behind them as they fly. Many might think the white smoke is just pollution from the jet engines, but this isn't the case.  Ever notice when watching a jet airplane fly overhead there is a white streak or stream behind it? This has many words for it, the main two words are vapor trail or contrail. Contrails happen when the air flowing over and under the surfaces of the aircraft create wingtip vortices mix with the moist air caused by the exhaust of the engines. The white streams you see are not engine exhaust. In fact what you are seeing before your eyes is formations of clouds which eventually dissipate after a while. Why Planes Leave Trails. When flying at high altitudes, jet engines exhaust extremely hot air and water vapor, among other things. The cold temperatures and low pressures at these altitudes result in the water forming into visible ice crystals.  Condensation trails behind aircraft are simply clouds. All three components are created, and when conditions are just right, these contrails will appear behind every plane in that part of the sky. Jet engines produce an incredible amount of heat, along with water vapor and other combustion exhaust particles like carbon dioxide.  Some people believe that the white trails behind aircraft are fuel because they’ve heard of pilots “dumping fuel” in the movies. Some aircraft are indeed equipped to be able to dump their jet fuel overboard. Some planes in the sky leave trails that persist and spread, and other planes, in the same sky, leave short-lived trails, or no trails at all. These trails are actually called contrails, short for “condensation trails”. They are not smoke from the engines, they are formed when the water in jet engine exhaust (and there’s quite a lot of it, like car exhaust on a cold day) mixes with wet cold air and condenses and freezes into ice crystals. Contrails are actually a type of cirrus cloud. When the air is wet and cold enough the trails can stay around for a long time, and sometimes spread out.
