I'd get the belt sander and skip the disc. The disc might give you a bigger sanding surface, but that belt would be more versatile. I've wanted one of those belt sanders for a while. permalink. The 5" drum turns approximately RPM and the sander will handle " wide stock. The drum is a stack of nineteen 3/4" MDF discs plus two 3/4" Baltic Birch discs on a 3/4" steel shaft. Conveyor belt problems. The main problem with this sander design was the conveyor feed table. The conveyor was a 16"x 48" sanding belt and the end rollers were made of PVC pipe. I made a power feed for the conveyor at the very beginning of this project, not expecting any problems with the conveyor. The power feed worked perfectly but was of no use with a conveyor that would.
A drum sander leaves ripples and will have to be finish sanded with a random orbit sander, so you are handling panels twice. You have faster belt changes on a widebelt and more powerful motor. The wide belt sander is the most common type of sander in modern workshops, and it is called that because it allows sanding belts to be wrapped in two drums. The rear drum is powered by an electric motor while the front one spins freely. With the belt sander, in a minute we can switch belts and work up the grit cycle. There is also the whole platen thing.
