I took a chance, and dang, this jig is incredible. I've cranked out 16 half-blind dovetail joints so far photo of a few of them , and a LOT of practice joints while dialing in exactly how tight I wanted them to fit. But then again being an engineer myself, it IS pretty tough to write simple instructions on a relatively complex setup, so I can understand this a little. Also, on this, the design doesn't leave much vertical space to fit a wrench in there to adjust the backup nut, a little extra would help. It's not perfect, but it's so simple, so useful, and does such a good job, it's hard to get upset at minor flaws. Worked great with Ply wood, a few fractures here and there, but simply sandwiching the vertically hanging piece with sacrificial piece prevents tear outs from becoming a big issue.

Straight out the box it comes 'almost' completely ready to start dovetailing but you do have to do your own tweaking to get it just right.

Now, if you end up with a unit like ours you wont ever get it right due to this one flaw It took us all of 24 hours to figure this out and many pieces of scrap wood later. I didnt have time to break down the particulars of why this is but the left side just isnt fabricated to the same precision as the right side.

The jig itself is solid. No play whatsoever once you have it fastened to your work bench.. There are some issues with this jig : 1. You need to have a router base that holds the bushings in place. No where in the description dose it saw anything about this.

Nor dose it come in the kit. Once I got the jig delivered and was setting it up did I realize I needed to order the router base that holds the bushings. Come on Porter Cable you guys should know better than that!! The instructions for this jig are absolutely horrible!! That is how bad the instructions are!! When I finally had it set up , it did an amazing job with the dovetail joints I needed.

Overall I love the jig. If the base plate was included or even if there was information that you need to buy it separately, it would of saved me time and the hassle.

Also if the instructions were better , I would be able to give this 5 stars. So considering these factors, I can only give it 4 stars. This is one of those "new-fangled" contraptions that really can completely replace the "old way" of cutting dovetails in some applications.

I'm a big proponent of learning to do things the "old way," since machines can never replace the quality and creativity of fine craftsmanship.

However - for cutting basic dovetails full, half-blind, or dado this thing is a major time-saver and produces a very tight, beautiful join. One minor disclaimer - this is the only dovetail jig I've ever used or ever intend to use; I'll keep cutting the more complicated stuff this thing can't do by hand , so I don't know how it compares to the more expensive jigs out there - but I do know that it will cut a basic dovetail that looks great in literally a few seconds, once it's been set up properly, and that's good enough for me.

If for any reason you don't want to learn how to cut dovetails by hand or don't have the time or desire to learn to do it well , or if you need to produce tight, beautiful joinery very quickly, this thing is the cat's meow. It's very easy to learn to use it especially if you already know how to cut a dovetail by hand , and the manual is very well written and explains not only the basic usage, but how to tweak it to your liking as well.

Great product. This is a great unit. I only mark it down due to the etchings being hard to read. These are necessary guides and must be followed so would be good if they had better contrast, especially for those of us whose eyes are not as sharp as they used to be but still love our woodwork. Would definitely buy exactly the same again. The router bits that came with it are really good also.
