Now that the peak travel season in India is over SpiceJet has begun removing the business class seats from their acquired former Jet Airways aircraft.
Not only was this good news for Jet Airways lessors, it could not have come at a better time for SpiceJet. With the peak travel month just around the corner, SpiceJet had just lost the use of 13 Boeing MAX aircraft following the worldwide grounding of the type.
It was a win-win for both lessors and us. Their aircraft was stranded in India and it would have taken them a long time to rationalize the asset. We asked them to get the aircraft airworthy and did short-term leases of years. All this, of course, meant that the planes had business class seats that SpiceJet sold for half the price of what Vistara was charging for their business class product. The consequences of this move, if you can call it that, is that SpiceJet now has a fleet of aircraft that are all configured differently.
We have not launched any business class product. Our Jet Airways story begins back in July Shortly afterwards, in fact, just a month later, Simple Flying reported that Jet Airways had just 60 days to cut costs and ensure continuity of service. Fast forward to October, and Jet Airways sought to stop repaying loans to ease its cash flow problems.
Then, in January, the airline defaulted on loans , starting a spiral of descent into serious money issues. While aircraft on the ground are not making money for Jet Airways, they are also not making money for their owners either.
Lessors are painfully aware of this, and some are trying to take action. These are Boeing MAX aircraft which have been banned from flying. Early reports of discussions have indicated that there could be as many as aircraft involved. India's aviation watchdog Directorate General of Civil Aviation had said at the time that these planes would be "grounded till appropriate modifications and safety measures are undertaken to ensure their safe operations".
The ban had hit SpiceJet the hardest. It owned 13 Boeing Max 8s while all five belonging to Jet Airways - the only other domestic airlines that had inducted this model - had already been grounded when the DGCA order came it.
Koteshwar claimed that SpiceJet intends to replace all Boeing planes with the more fuel efficient Boeing Max planes in the next months, assuming they get the regulator's nod to fly. The airline is reportedly also evaluating the low-cost model to fly to long-haul international destinations. He further claimed that SpiceJet will add more than 50 to its fleet during the current calendar year. Also read: SpiceJet posts net loss of Rs Settings Logout.
