He volunteered extensively with Bereaved Families of Cape Breton. He was always willing to help someone when they needed it. His intelligence, wisdom, and guidance, and great sense of humour were always welcomed. Through his struggle with alcohol addiction and his involvement in Alcoholics Anonymous he was helped by many people and had the opportunity to help many others who struggled with addiction through the years.
Jim took great pride in his work with Alcoholics Anonymous, was a firm believer in the program, and treasured the lifelong friendships he made through AA. He was predeceased by his first wife Jenny, brothers Teddy and Archie, and stepdaughter Susan. Thankful for the mentoring he received early on, Bob was always supportive of the ambitions of young people in his life.
Alice and Bob married in He was a devoted husband and father who welcomed opportunity and change with courage and optimism. Bob moved his family to BC in to begin as a salesman with Winchester Corporation.
Later, as national sales manager, Bob travelled coast to coast from Cobourg, ON, cultivating the shooting sports and hunting business. He was involved with the Canadian Amateur Trap Assoc. After Winchester closed Canadian operations, Bob established two successful sports sales agencies with partners who became lifelong friends. Bob was fortunate to have hunted and fished from Vancouver Island to Newfoundland, Central America to northern Quebec.
His sense of adventure also took him to Europe, Asia, Africa, and Australia. Alice and Bob had three cherished grandsons who illuminated their lives. Grandad Bob was so proud of his boys, watching them on the hockey rink and football field. He was their most devoted fan. Gregarious and welcoming, Bob thoroughly enjoyed meeting new people and sharing his considerable knowledge of fish and wildlife gained through his life of work, reading, travel, and conversation.

She stayed with them until they were old enough to be on their own. Sophie worked at the Sacred Heart Hospital as a kitchen helper for 17 years. She then married her second husband, Josie Roach. Sophie loved playing La Dame de Pique with her daughter, almost every day, even in the past years with her eyesight getting worse.
She loved getting visitors. She was always happy to see anyone and would recognize them by their voices. To her siblings, she was like a mother, and her daughter Marie Jeanne was a big part of the family a niece, but like a sister.

After spending years with her husband, the late Reverend Robert Mueller, undertaking community development work in India; serving churches in Ohio, Wisconsin, and Illinois; and supporting the civil-rights movement in Chicago, she again studied voice under leading professionals in Chicago, and subsequently performed in the Lyric Opera of Chicago and at select dinner venues which featured operatic offerings.
She also found her calling serving as activities director at a large retirement community in Chicago and later at the Alderwood Residential Facility in Baddeck, Cape Breton. In Cape Breton she enjoyed many additional pleasures of her life: gardening, baking, crafting, and more. Betty is survived by three of her children, Christine, Eric, and Patricia; sister Marjorie and brother William; three grandchildren; and other beloved family members.

John Payne had a genuine smile that was infectious to all he met, and his kindness was felt by all that knew him. He loved to meet new people and share stories and hear theirs and would always leave having made another friend. He would give anything that was asked of him and all he would ask in return was to pass on that same kindness.

Frank enjoyed travelling with his family to Massachusetts, Connecticut, Michigan, and Florida over the years visiting relatives and friends. Upon retirement he and Alice would spend occasional winters in Florida, enjoying their time there with family and friends.
Frank also enjoyed watching the horse races, playing cards, watching baseball, hockey, and curling on TV with Alice. He always enjoyed chatting with old friends, locally and from away about old times growing up in Inverness. He enjoyed good food and special treats such as fudge and butterscotch pie.

Alice was a very strong, independent, kind, and caring person who enjoyed life. She was known for her red hair, colorful vocabulary, her baked goods and going to bingo. Being raised on a farm as an only child, she did it all from hauling water, to twitching logs, to looking after the farm. There was nothing that she couldn't turn her hand to.
There was always a way to get things done. In , she married the love of her life, Mose Arthur Cormier, and raised a family of five. For many years she worked at the Margaree Lodge in the laundry department. Alice lived a life of deep faith and love of God. She prayed the rosary daily and always had a novena on the go.

After retiring in , he bought a green John Deere tractor. From then on, many a sunny day saw him mowing, tilling, bush hogging, and helping with community projects. He was always meticulous about his work, and took great pride in a job well done. An unexpected bonus was acquiring many new friends from both the US and Canada.
Ranald loved sports, as player, coach, and fan. He played first base for the Miners, the Royals, and Landon Construction softball teams. After retirement, he spent many happy hours on the golf course.
Even as his strength dwindled, he always found enough energy to carry him through those alluring 18 holes. Thank you to the nurses, cooks, and cleaning staff who treated us with such kindness, respect, and compassion.

After the war she moved to Ontario, where she met and married Jim, a handsome young Irishman. Together they raised six children in Galt now Cambridge and were active in St. Patrick's parish, where Kaye served on the CWL executive, including as president. She was a talented bookkeeper, gardener, avid reader of history and proud Maritimer. She also knitted countless sweaters and socks as gifts, and will be missed by everyone who received them.

After her children were grown, Cindy enjoyed her work at the Fair Isle Motel.
She loved to travel to visit family that lived away or would often have family stay with her on their visits to Cape Breton. Mostly, she cherished the time spent with her grandchildren and great-grandchildren; and always had a cookie waiting for them in the cupboard. Cindy was predeceased by her parents, four sisters, two brothers and her great-granddaughter, Alaina. With pride, she became a Canadian citizen in Catherine worked in Whycocomagh as a cashier at the Co-op and a waitress at the Texaco Restaurant. She and Allan always supported their children, ensuring they had ample access to education and extracurricular activities. They continued this and enjoyed many adventures with their grandchildren, Mikaela and Nathan. Catherine spent much time volunteering for church and community, instilling these values in her children.
Her kindness and thoughtfulness were appreciated by family and friends. Crosswords and sudoku were a favourite pastime. Most evenings she could be found at a local card game. She is also remembered for her love of lemon pie. She is a life member of United Church Women.

He cherished his family, friends, and welcomed many visits from the neighbourhood kids. The house was never too full for him, there was always a meal and a place to stay. She was very involved in her community. An avid card player, she never turned down an opportunity for a good game. The Soo Locks on the St. Marys River allow vessels to navigate the 21 ft elevation change between Lake Superior and the lower Great Lakes. To build the new lock, deepening the channel on the upstream side west of the Poe lock is necessary. Dredging is scheduled to occur in Drilling and blasting are required to fragment the bedrock and concrete for dredging. Ground vibration, underwater shockwaves from blasting, and the potential physical impacts to nearby fish and fish eggs in the St.
The team found nine data sources and reviewed them to determine the upper limit of vibrations and sudden change in water pressure brought on from blasting.
The team developed estimated thresholds to protect fish spawning habitat in the immediate dredging area. The Seafarers International Union of Canada says that is because of the potential danger of an outbreak onboard a vessel and a shortage of workers to replace crew members who get sick. There is limited space to physically distance on a ship and there are few medical resources on a vessel to deal with a COVID outbreak should it occur.
The union represents seafarers who work inside Canada and abroad. Given wants his crews to be given the vaccine after health-care workers and seniors get their shots. Many seafarers spend three months aboard ship, with one month off, but some crews spend up to nine months on a vessel. Some workers have stayed on board even longer during the pandemic. There have only been a handful of COVID outbreaks on ships so far, and one seafarer has died as a result, said Given.
He's worried that could get worse if his members aren't vaccinated soon. The medical resources and support seafarers would get on board are far, far limited compared to land-based working environments.
