Could I apply the finish first and then use your approach to brand the piece followed by a clear spray finish over the brand? I have no clue on doing this over a finish.

I could only recommend using a test piece first to try it out. Just did this and it worked well. My logo is small so I used the iron as it was heating and unplugged it Custom Wood Burner Stamp Value just at it started browning the paper.
