I had one issue though, I was drilling a hole in some white pine and my bit seized up. When i pulled it out it looked fine but would not go back in the hole no matter how how many times i tried. I held it up to a ruler and found out it bent about 1mm in the middle.
This is not what i expected to happen to a piece of metal in such soft wood, and i couldnt return it because amazon only allows it within 30 days. I decided to call the Kreg company and ask them if they would be willing to replace it even though i bought it 5 months ago on amazon.
They were super friendly and had a replacement shipped out same day without asking for a cent. Customer service is very important to me so this was awesome to hear.
I use the Kreg face clamp, angle clamp, and even the pocket hole plugs. I will continue to use and recommend them for their good products and good customer service. I was on the phone with them for barely 5 minutes and they had it shipped out same day without making me fill out a bunch of stuff and asking a bunch of questions just my address.
I thought I would have to put my project on hold a few days but i'm already back to work! Highly recommend this company :. Fantastic design and affordable compared to other jigs from Kreg. It's a straightforward setup and there are good instructions as to the depth and what type of screws you should use for each depth.
I consider this jig a necessity for my woodworking as I have a limited space and limited tools. I also suggest buying the Kreg screws because they pull the boards flush whereas some screws you have lying around won't match inside the drill hole as well and won't pull the boards together as well. I am a big fan of Kreg jigs, and I have built all kinds of things that are holding up well using my R3 jig and rip guide from them. This one falls way short of the R3, and I doubt I will use it unless I have to drill holes in tight places.
Here are all the problems I have found, just from my initial impression: -For starters, there is no edge guide on the jig. The instructions tell you how far to place the jig from the edge for given thicknesses, but that also means measuring and drawing extra lines if you want consistent holes. I am hoping to find room in my R3 case to put the parts from this jig so nothing gets lost, and thankfully the R3 case has markings for quick setting the drill stop, otherwise that would be another thing that has to be measured and takes extra time.
The square head driver is an odd tool for most garages to have, so it is really disappointing that it is not included with this jig. The drill bit and the hole size on this jig are the same size as the ones included with the R3 jig, and you are going to need the square driver anyway, so unless you really need this for tight space work I would highly recommend getting the R3 instead of this jig.
I bought this with one clamp and an assortment set of screws to try out sometime. Like many of my new tools it didn't get used right away. I continued gluing joints with biscuit wafers as I was accustomed to doing. I found myself on a tight timeline for my last project so decided to give this a try.
After a little bit of practice on scraps I got the hang of it and built a chest and mirror combination in much less time than would have been required for waiting on glue to cure.
See photo The entire chest and mirror frame is joined with the pocket jig joints rather than wafers and glue, and it is solid.
As for strength, I built two 90 degree joints out of similar size scrap. One was a glued biscuit wafer joint. One was a pocket jig screwed joint. Though not a scientific test, I found comparable strength on both joints when I stressed them to their breaking points. There might be times when I will still use glue but I love the speed and accuracy of assembly with these tools. By Grandpa Wilbur on May 17, Images in this review. I played around with it when I first got it months ago and did not completely get the hang of it or understand it until I watched a bunch of videos.
