Thread starter Bobostro61 Start date Feb 16, Bobostro61 Member. It seems that this stuff doesn't give a high gloss finish. VERY satin finish if you ask me. I should add I guess I'm looking for a food safe finish that is high gloss. Does one exist? All finishes are food safe these days once cured, so you can use anything from shellac, poly, or lacquer to get the gloss depending on the end use of the bowl. Wildman Member. I do not know of any high gloss film or oil finish that is food safe.
Do not subscribe to one a finish is dry it is food safe, while FDA list many toxic chemcial that are safe for food contact do not list andy wood finishing products. Drying times do not equal curing time, most film finishes provide an in use time knowing full well their product may take more days or up to more than one month to fully cure.
When in doubt look at product MSDS and see if you want to eat of that bowl once finished. If turn a bowl for someone wanting to eat out of it; I use mineral oil as a finish, and give that person a small bottle of mineral oil to refinish as needed.
Use film finish on ninety nine percent of my bowls and tell people my bowls are not food safe whether giving or selling. Joined Feb 7, Messages My Bad.

He does sell a walnut oil with his name Mahoney's Walnut Oil Which one might say he promotes, which is a very good product. He has a large barn on his acreage that is impressive And one of his reportore of rotations is a calabash bowl My Calabash Zia series resulted from seeing that rotation. You could also contact Hawaiian turners who have historic examples of eating dinnerware, they also have a calabash form.

You can use a few coats to seal the wood too. The endorsement, itself, seems to be a barrier to a lawsuit. John Torchick. One thing would be how the finish would react to being washed with dish soap and water. I have a wood cutting board that has all the finish or whatever washed off. I have never thought of re-coating it. Wash it and let it dry in the dish drain.

The white diamond buffs off the Tripoli and the Wax or just a polishing brush would buff off the white diamond.
If not completely, then it would reduce the levels to extremely low. This is purely a guess but if the white diamond didn't buff off the tripoli then you would have tripoli scratches. Same is true for the wax buff I would think. Back to litigation.
One of my friends in the Rock Climbing community used to teach climbing. I find the easiest way to apply the wax is with my fingers, but you could also use a q-tip or a popsicle stick or a sponge or I then rubbed the wax in the areas where I wanted distressing. I applied the wax fairly thick to ensure that no paint would seep through. I then painted the entire box in Fusion Mineral Paint in the colour Little Star , including those areas where I applied the wax.
This is what the first coat looked like. It's sometimes scary looking after one coat, isn't it? I then applied a second coat of paint. Although the majority of Fusion colours cover very well with two coats, this wood box needed a third coat. Once the paint was dry, I used grit sandpaper and sanded where I had applied the wax and the paint came off like a charm.
I wiped away the dust and the project was done. I chose not to apply any sort of topcoat to the wood box. I was happy with the final results! The metal stars are also painted in Little Star. Of course the colours are not just for tots! The line has seven lovely colours including Little Lamb , which is my bestselling grey.
