A woodworking vice is not an essential feature of this. Typically though we can expect to see two vices on a workbench today. One will be installed on the front of the bench, towards the left. We tend to call this the face vice.  The bench builder had incorporated rectangular dog holes aligned with wagon vises the full length of the bench. I cut two pieces waste hard wood to loosely fit the dog holes, cute a piece of the flooring to the width of the bench, and mounted the small pieces of wood with counter-sunk screws so they slid into any pair of opposite dog holes. I drilled a hole near one end and it hangs over my bench until I need it. The vise is best fitted with an auger bit and brace (the first cordless drill) or of course you could use a drill-driver and paddle bit too. I begin by measuring the width of the vise jaw and adding 1/8”. Vises sometimes need repair or adjusting, and I like some room to maneuver heavy vises in and out.  Follow Paul's technique and project videos over at Woodworking Masterclasses, our dedicated site for honing your skills. In this video, Ed Pirnik shows you how to mount one to your workbench, using a spacer block and a full length inside jaw apron. Later, Ed shows how to drill dog holes so they are aligned properly with your vise, and talks about how to use them. Jun 15,  · 2. Taking some shavings, sawdust, and tiny scrap bits of wood and mixing it all in the hole to be plugged with wood glue. 3. Find an old piece of scrap wood or dry board with knots. Pop the knot out to use it as a patch for the hole, if it’s close in size and thickness to said hole. I’ve done 1. and 3. and it worked a treat. Jun 01,  · Face vises are attached on the front, or face, of the bench; end vises are installed on the end. The best benches have both, but if you can only afford one, I’d go for a face vise initially. Right-handers should mount a face vise at the far left of the bench’s front edge and an end vise on the end of the bench at the foremost right-hand corner.
