I find it much easier to get repeatable sharpening results with a honing guide, but I have noticed that the plane blades I sharpen with my Eclipse style guide are ending up with a different geometry than I want, and it is preventing me closing the mouth on my smoothing plane very tightly. When looking at the blade from above, the angle between the edge to the long sides is changing, so that the edge is developing a skew. My theory is that this happens because the blade tapers in width measurably along its length (EDIT: approximately 1/16" over its length), and also because the right jaw o. Some plane blades are too wide to sharpen with my honing guide. Instead, I use this shop-made guide. It’s made from a glued-up wood block cut at an angle to match the bevel of the plane blade. With the guide sitting on a flat surface, place the plane blade on top, bevel side down, and tighten the threaded knob. Roll the guide back and forth on the abrasive surface to sharpen. Loosen the knob and adjust the blade to maintain contact with the surface if needed. Go to the next slide to see how I made this jig. Two inner pieces (fender pieces) are notched to house nylon wheels, while a knob and wa. No. 4 Smooth Plane This is the standard-size smoothing plane. After other planes have done the prep work, it will take the finest shavings from the most difficult woods to leave you with a finished surface. /2" long. Blade is 2" wide x" thick.  Geometry: All Bench Plane blades are bedded at 45° with the bevel down. Sharpening: The blade comes ready to use, but honing a secondary bevel of 5° or 10° will increase performance, help achieve a razor edge quickly, and improve edge life in hardwoods. You can find sharpening instructions in a printable PDF format here: Sharpening Instructions PDF. For more information on advanced sharpening we recommend David Charlesworth’s video Plane Sharpening, available in both DVD and streaming formats. Blade Adjustment. Blade Sharpening The high-angle blade supplied with this plane enables it to excel at smoothing woods with varying grain. The blade has been ground with a 38° bevel, yielding an effective cutting angle of 50° that is commonly known as a York pitch (a step up from the 45° bench plane). This is the ideal starting point for the least push. I will describe how I sharpen a smoothing plane. This is a plane that will put a surface on a large area such as the main surface of a raised panel or a style or rail of a door. First, I start off by honing the blade to the proper angle, 25º in my case for the Stanley smoothing plane. Dig the cutting edge into a board for safety and polish the face with a soft cloth. Once you have done this, it can simply be maintained on the strop as shown. Now set up the sharpening plates and smoothing-plane-blade-sharpening-500 hone following the video. This is very fast.

I usually use a grinding wheel to establish the sharpening angle and hollow grind the bevel on chisels and planes blades. In either case, most Japanese planes and chisels are finished by craftsmen who are not the blacksmith, whose job it is to cut the wooden dai for a plane, or fit a wooden handle to a chisel. PROS: Very solid guide with good heft. This burr is formed as the surface of the bevel is ground down and intersects with the surface of the back. Therefore we will be using this geometry throughout this lesson.
