This Pergola arbor seat was built to exist in an apple orchard. The builder designed it for his wife who wanted a meditative space for quiet contemplation outside. The instruction plans walk you through how to create the uprights, the latticed backs, the seat back, the sides, the seat base, and the roof. He was looking for a way to create a shaded, semi-enclosed area where he and his friends could cook, party, drink, laugh and enjoy themselves while getting at least partial protection from the sun.

This upcycled wood pergola was built from a demolished deck. The woodworker wanted to make it on the cheap. The maker says that it is also an arbor that can support other types of plants. This flat top structure has narrow lines and can serve both functional and decorative purposes. We found that the instructions were particularly helpful with the initial difficulty of installing vertical posts that are all the same height. Indeed, the thorough design plans provided by Mother Earth News cover the installation of the pergola posts, how to make pyramid cuts, how to place the cross beams, shaping the lap joints, raising the roof boards, installing the lattice panels, and applying the finish.

They used peeled polls from foraged wood, though they remarked that this can be a little bit difficult because this found wood can be irregularly shaped. Mother Earth News provides instructions for assembling a rustic Pergola that is complemented by a potting table and bench.

A helpful video walk-through provides additional feedback for woodworkers looking to embark on this fun, DIY project. This Vineyard Pergola has somewhat of a different design. You can download a PDF file and print out the instructions which include a comprehensive material list, recommended tools and clearly delineated instructions to help you assemble this unique-looking option.

RemodelAholic provides a tutorial for this stunning option. This open-air build is designed to encircle a fire pit, with six garden swings hanging from eaves. One of the more important aspects with this design is preparing the outdoor area because it includes the additional design consideration of a fire pit in at its center. You can even try hanging flower pots from it.

When it comes to constructing a freestanding pergola, they recommend you contact your local building office to see if you require a permit or not. Another unique option, this outdoor kitchen pergola provides a shaded area as well as a work island for food preparation and serving. The countertop includes a sink as well as drawers and cabinets- the countertop can accommodate a miniature refrigerator as well as an icemaker. For example, when I need to remove a lot of material from a localized area, I need to think like a tree assassin and exploit its weaknesses.

This week I was finishing up work on the joined Chinese stool for the cover of the Autumn issue of Woodworking Magazine. I took the components to my shop at home , mostly to avoid all the scatological jokes we all…. With every project there is always some tool that deserves an Academy Award-style acceptance speech. Traditional cut nails can be made from pretty soft steel, especially the useful cut headless brads.

As a result, you have to be careful when installing them. Here are some of the things that can go wrong and how I deal with them. Your pilot hole is too shallow.

One early book on woodworking…. When making through-mortises by hand, one of the occasional problems is that you get a little mallet happy, you drive the mortise chisel a little too deep and you blow out a piece of grain on the exit side.

Or you drive a too-tight tenon into the through-mortise, the tenon hits the rim of the…. One of my hobbies is chairmaking. That statement might sound kinda dumb. Making stick chairs uses another part of my brain.

And any time I venture into building chairs I have to re-learn some of the rules. In some ways, chairmaking…. In the tool world there is an ugly and erroneous slur. Anyway, I have no dog in this fight.

The real point was that today while I…. I like a good carcase saw in the same way I like to eat most parts of the pig. I like the way that its well-tuned crosscut teeth slice into the grain and leave behind a glassy smooth cut. I like how easy the saws are to start. As a result I almost always get the stink eye from the others in the shop. What are horns?

This is when you make your stiles longer than they need to be, usually…. While I own an electric plunge router and all manner of bits and guides, I tend to cut my stopped dados using hand tools for a couple reasons. And two: The hand-tool method involves less….

For those of you who chisel out all your waste when dovetailing, this post is not for you. Please move along. I have. As a general rule a lower working height is best for heavy tiring work, whilst a taller bench can save your back from stooping, when things get small and detailed.

Like with many things in life a compromise is in order, and to offer some guideline, I like to suggest the following:. Stand with your usual workshop shoes on and keep your arms straight down the sides of your body but palms flexed up so they are parallel with the floor. Ask someone to take the measurement between the floor and underside of your palm. This palm measurement will give you a great workbench height for most hand tool woodworking, but it can feel rather low for joinery and detailed work.

I recommend adding a couple of inches to your palm measurement, to give a nice comfortable height for a mixture of activities. If you do mainly delicate close up work, or suffer with your back, then a further inch or two would be a good idea. When building a workbench you need to consider the type of work that it will be used for. You could compare it to your present bench, a table or even just mark a line on the wall.

Bare in mind that a comfortable working height for woodworking, will likely look low when you just stand next to it. A tall workbench is good for detailed work, cutting joinery, and for power tool use. A height in between these two extremes tends to be the most popular, particular if you do a range of activities at your workbench.
