Maybe I could make samples and experiment to see if finizh possible to change from one finish to the other Clear editor. I use this salad bowl finish on all my turned products that are intended to be used with food. Accessibility Options.

I use Salad Bowl finish on kids tables Woodcraft Salad Bowl Finish Jacket and cutting boards. Easy to apply and dries smooth, very little sanding is needed. Brings out the grian and deepens the color of the wood. After two coats you don't need to add anything.

The one area I don't like is the price, it could be a little cheaper, other than the price, it's a great product. This is a great product for applying to bowls of any size. It provides a nice looking food safe finish. I have made several bowls and canister sets and love this product. I like doing art work on wood and the Salad Bowl Finish is food safe and opens a new way for me to make the art work "useful". I can use it on serving pieces as well as the bowls. I like bowls most as you can use your own thoughts in the design of bowls, and this finish give nice completion to bowls.

I like this product for my bowls and the application while they are on the lathe. It evenly distributes and is food safe My husband and I use this finish on our bread boards and it is a wonderful product. Goes on smoothly and dries to a great shine.

Only problem with this is, after a certain amount of time, it darkens and starts to harden up. We only make bread boards for friends and family and only a few at a time and something needs to be done to improve the quality so this would not happen.

This is a great product for wood projects that will come in contact with food. I find it very similar to tongue oil in consistency and use. Been using this product for cutting boards for a few years, much better than mineral oil. I checked with many paint stores, and nobody could tell me a food safe finish.

When calling your information line I was immediately directed to this product. It works great. Find a Store. My Account. My Cart. Go to Home Page. Mobile Navigation. Same Day Shipping Find a Store.

Then Woodcraft Salad Bowl Finish 11 use a larger scrap or heck even a board I understand it costs money Lot better than using the actual project as a test piece. This is so true with any finish.

Reminds me of that joke In general, I don't like to use the varnishing technique on anything BUT end grain. Problem is, you have a bit of a different situation when you're talking about a full countertop. Now we're talking about possible repeated water exposure on a daily basis. Unless the person truly intends to use the countertop as a primary cutting surface, I'd go with the more water-resistant product for the sake of longevity. Then I'd take some leftover scraps from the project and make them a beautiful cutting board.

Marc, So, thats one vote for each Yup, but that's just me. Lots of ways to skin the cat. Personally, I feel that wood is a pretty crappy material for a modern day counter top in a house. But I can see why some folks want it for the warmth and visual appeal.

It's just completely impractical, in my personal opinion. Really, I need to get this project back in the lab garage and finish it, ha, "finish it" no pun intended. Since this is countertop, and will be mounted to a cabinet, if I go with the MO finish need the underside be finished with MO too?

Let me know. I"ll post pictures, plenty of pics, help me finish this thing and I promise to post picures You'll be woo-ing and ahh-ing, Plenty of questions and critiquing What else would you like to know? The properties of both mineral oil and varnish are pretty well-established and were reviewed already in this thread.

The only thing left to do is make a decision. If there is something you aren't clear on, feel free to ask. But I think the reason the responses have stopped is because there isn't a whole lot more to say about it. To answer your question above, I probably would finish both sides equally. Although because you only get one shot at the underside, you might be better off with a more protective finish for the sake of longevity and sealing.

That then begs the question, will having a sealed underside cause movement issues when the top side is not sealed, or at least only treated with mineral oil? That's a great question.

Glad I asked it. I have no idea, lol. Part of the reason I suggested sealing it first with the salad bowl finish on all sides, balances the absorption of oil , moisture etc.

I going with the Mineral Oil, its to be a practical, useful and huge cutting board. I'll apply both sides. Lets see how this pans out You can post now and register later. If you have an account, sign in now to post with your account.

A friend can't decide on the finish for a maple cutting board, salad bowl or mineral oil?
. Chris H Posted February 28, For cutting surfaces you want to use an oil.

BLO or Mineral Oil will both work. I dont want to seem ungreatful CH, but that didnt answer my question Posted March 1, Autorotate 41 Posted March 1, TRBaker Posted March 1, I wish I could go with Aces sample idea, except this board is countertop sized and I dont think one would get the full affect. Maybe I could make samples and experiment to see if it possible to change from one finish to the other
