I thought about insetting a standard router plate in the MFT but I don't want to put something in the table that will interfere with using the saw.

I had been thinking about the Rockler compact router table which is a bench top unit with fold-up legs. It does have some features that are nice but I can't justify the price. I feel I could make something equivalent for a lot less money.
