How to Use a Marking Knife - How to Be a Woodworker | Sikana

Using Marking Gauges. In general, hold the marking gauge with a light grip and let the sharp edge or point cut the line. Set the point or knife just long enough to mark; apply lateral pressure to keep the fence against the wood. Ride the gauge on the whole edge and not just the corner of the piece, a common source of error leading to inaccuracy. The Marking Knife can be held as you would grip a pen, or, as you would grip a regular knife. Remember to keep your fingertips away from the sharp edges. Watch your fingers. Some marking knives have a spear-point with a bevel on either side. This helps mark a line in both directions. To mark a line along which to saw, first use a ruler to measure the distance from the edge that needs to be shortened.
