Be prepared to move them out of the way, and to dig down to the better stock. QTY: 0. If you're going to use MDF for a workbench top, design it so that it has a sacrificial hardboard layer both on top and on bottom. It's less critical that the shelf be well supported along its length. I was determined to fix it. Most benchtop vises have a flat surface on top, directly in the center, to function as an anvil. I clamped a piece of ply on the back, to reduce tear-out.

The front vise has its moving jaw made of /2" oak, but uses the edge of the bench as its stationary jaw. So while for the end vise, if we mount it lower, we can make both the jaws deeper to compensate, for the front vise we cannot, so we want it mounted as close to the edge of the bench as possible. Sjoberg Front Vise Hardware Originally designed for their Elite Series this vise has a metal base for holding the hardware making it much less likely to rack then other wooden jaw front vise hardware. Benchcrafted Glide Leg Vise A major improvement over traditional leg vises. The Glide keeps the vise parallel as it moves. With the major parts fabricated, it was time to mount the vise on my workbench. I started by flipping the bench over, putting the vise where it will be and drilling through the underside for the 1/2″ pivot bolts. I then put the bench upright again and routed oval countersinks in the top.
