Does it mean the same thing as soft close or is it   I'm looking for a heavy duty side mounted drawer slide for my trash pullout. I've seen some labeled soft close that seem to be like my blum soft close drawers I have. I have also seen "self-closing" slides and I'm not sure what that means. Does it mean the same thing as soft close or is it different? If so, what's the difference? Thanks!. Shenk said he intentionally tests different manufacturers' components on the drawers and doors of the Horizon showroom, as well as in his house, so he can see what he likes, what holds up and what he feels comfortable endorsing. Some of the side-mounted slides have a spring for self-closing and a piston for soft closing. Back in the day, the original pistons were oil-driven and presented some problems, while modern pistons are air-driven and work great, according to Martin.

There also is a "tug" element built into slides, which refers to the small amount of force needed Soft Close Drawer Slides Advantages List to open a drawer against the small force that keeps it closed.

For the most part, that bug has been worked out but it's worth remembering when testing a slide. And remember, the slides will perform slightly different when the drawer is filled. The trade-off is that the bottom of the drawer needs to be recessed to receive the slide.

Martin said that most under-mount slide manufacturers offer the same guarantee for their component as they do for the cabinetry itself.

Martin said that the under-mount slides are not intended to be retrofitted onto a drawer that has been built for the two side-type slides. Even if the homeowner is fine with the excess space on the sides of the drawers, any attempt to modify the bottom of the drawer becomes cost-prohibitive as well as "compromises the joinery of the drawer box," he said.

In most cases, the side-mount drawers are a four-piece drawer with the face being the front of the drawer. The under-mount boxes most often are considered five-piece drawers because the front is independent of the box and is attached to the front of the box.

There are after-market components that can be added to get the soft-close feature. The soft-close component is added to each side of the drawer and inside each side of the cabinet. The inside of the cabinet might need to be packed out with a filler piece of wood so that the cabinet part of the soft-close component is flush with the opening of the drawer.

Some manufacturers have evolved their side-mount, ball-bearing slides to incorporate the soft-close feature, and replacing the old with the new is relatively easy. The three common hinges used with cabinet doors are a knife hinge, where just a small section of the hinge is visible from the outside and a spring makes it self-closing; an exposed barrel hinge, with which the whole spine of the hinge is visible and it makes the door free-swinging and in need of a magnetic catch; and the European cup hinge, which is not visible at all from the outside and self-closes by an internal spring.

A soft-close mechanism with a piston can be added to the cabinet to make it soft-closing. Additional blocking may be required to position the mechanism flush with the cabinet opening. The location of that component determines when the piston will engage, which in turn, determines how much of the swing will be softened.

Some of the cup hinges have a soft-closing feature built into the hinge itself, while there are add-ons that can be snapped onto some models of the cup hinges. When soft-close slides, hinges or add-ons are incorporated into a rooms' cabinetry, slamming and banging is eliminated. The room seems quieter and the residents more considerate. Share this. March 23, They have all broken in the same spot, on the plastic that I described My vendor did replace 2 so far, waiting on the third. Here is a link that might be useful: our kitchen project.

I just renovated my Kitchen and got the same story from my cabinet maker. My drawer slides are Hardware Concept Inc from Florida. I am in Jupiter FL. I contacted the company and they said that I should not be having these issues with the drawers and that it was my cabinet maker who has installed the product incorrectly.

The company has done nothing to help correct the problem and my cabinet maker insists that people in Florida don't use soft close because they are hard to open and need to be loaded in order to work properly. I never have heard such crap before. I asked the cabinet maker to use Blumotion because it is a fabulous product I have in my other home. All drawer sizes work beautifully and have for 4 years.

He said the Hardware Concept product was as good if not better so I agreed to go with the product he wanted. Little did I know he had no idea how to install the product. They have been installed twice and still do not work properly. I am left with with drawers that do not work the way they are suppose to work.

Your cabinet maker is giving you the run-around! I am in the Jupiter area also and have had soft close drawers and cabinets for 5 plus years and they work perfectly. We just renovated our kitchen and my new Blumotion work flawlessly also. If the cabinet maker has tried to install your glides correctly twice, and they still don't work properly, I would call the manufacturer and have them recommend a competent installer to fix them for you.

I just picked up a coffee table that I had made from a customer to fix this very problem- I had used self closing side mount slides due to the fact that the drawers are so small in height Blumotion wouldn't work. It is being used by an older person and I agree that it is hard to pull the drawer open. The work great the other way. This is the first time this has happened to my in over 35 years and thousands of drawer installs.

No one should have to fight to get their drawer open. Yes and it is our responsibility as pros to communicate and do a great show and tell with the customer. Note: Although the home owner is the final customer--I did this for a designer here in Scottsdale Arizona-she being a pro has given me time to fix before the home owner sees it and moves in.

That is a great designer to plan in her project management risks and small fixes in her timeline. I have just had them installed came from Lowes and have the same issue. But I DO have a solution for you. In the very back of the mounted guide rail on each side of the drawer you will see a gray plastic mechanism. Do this on both guide rails both sides. Now, with the gray mechanisms released, the drawers will slide smoothly and easily back and forth Soft Close Drawer Slides Adjustment Layer on the rails.

BUT, do not push the drawer back hard enough to make then re-engage with the gray mechanisms - just let them come to rest at the back. If you push too hard, you will re-engage the gray mechanisms. This solves the hard pulling Soft Close Vs Self Close Slides Uml problem, but you lose the soft-close feature. Try it and see! But maybe your advice will help someone else finding the thread I just got new drawers and some feel a little hard to open. How exactly should I clean the tracks?

Even though I have a dining table in the kitchen I like to sit at the table in the living room in the morning having breakfast since it's only me here.

I quite like the sofa in the middle of the room, there is enough room for a walk through behind it. The table in the kitchen is used when people come round. We all seem to stay in the kitchen and use the table. I'm in two minds on what to do with the black wallpaper pcmom. I am looking at taking it down and replacing it with the wallpaper pictured below to be on that wall and on the fireplace wall.

I think black wallpaper on the fireplace wall would be too much. The rest of the walls would be a light grey colour. Would this work? Horrible Kitchen Cabinet Setup Q. Mariam wrote: Here's a pic of another kitchen with similar layout, but what they did was add that crown moulding at the ceiling, which brings cabinets lower and better in-reach. Well, actually cabinets have a standard height from the counter, so moulding fills the gap above visually, rather than changing the lower height.

However, your predecessors chose to have open shelves down where you would rather have your usable space. I'd suggest 1 putting your everyday dishes which are probably in sets anyway, and thus presentable in the open shelves 2 alternatively, you can pay somebody to take out those two sets of cabinets and reverse them, so that the closed Soft Close Drawer Slides Hard To Close Zero space is where you want it and the open space is above 3 get a step stool that's either light enough to kick around the room or has a tall handle for easy relocation.

Also you need to be willing to invest considerable time in getting multiple quotes from all the different trades required to complete the project and cross check the material and labor costs with experience or data from online sources to keep them all honest. So, yes you could save a bit of money if you're an informed customer and you're not in a hurry. Definitely has it's benefits and may actually be cheaper in this case. You are talking cabinets, hardware, tile, countertops and painting.

Could be a lot to manage on your own. Before i came up with my solution - i looked at this extensively. Problem seems to be - You sacrifice the soft close of Maximera which gives a very nice feel.

There's no way to synchronize two push sticks if they are fitted on opposite sides of large drawers, which is what you need if you would want to trigger the drawers by pushing anywhere on the drawer. With multiple push sticks what i found is that you can get into a situation where you're trying to close a drawer and it's latching one push stick and triggering the other one. I am not saying that you shouldnt try it and you may be happy with the outcome,.

I eventually developed the BLUM solution for IKEA because i went with push sticks first on a mock up i built before fitting my kitchen and just couldn't get the result and feel that i wanted. I had put together a second video that showed a very basic comparison between the BLUM solution i came up with and push sticks. And you can try multiple approaches and use longer push sticks and all of this may give you an improved operation - although you're still not going to solve the synchronization and soft close issue i think.

Thanks for all the responses. I am almost sure that you got some chinese knock offs instead of blums : No need to make new drawers. Where are you located?

Unfortunately, my suspicions were right. One way or the other, they need to be replaced. Like 2 Save. Once you go blum you will never forget the soft, airy glides. So something is very wrong. Where did you test the drawers? Your cabinetmaker's showroom or some other showroom? Update - Cabinet maker has agreed to replace all the drawer slides to blum.

He said that different drawer slides have different drawer box size requirements. Blum is not bad as they are the most widely used but they just are not my favorite. I'm having my cabinets custom made. The drawer glides are part of the price but I want easy to open drawers. What other brands are good?

Buehl 11 years ago. Is there not a decent slide between BLumotion and junk? Thanks for any comments. Did you actually look? I just had Kraftmaid cabinets installed and at least the 1 drawer I looked at was indeed a Blum.
