I'm guessing this problem affects a whole lot of these machines. Meanwhile I was able to flatten the original table so that it's fairly functional by banging on it with a rubber mallet. It's stamped steel about 2 mm thick. Could have come up with better and more controlled machanism. The machine works but it is very difficult to calibrate. I need to sand larger than 10 inches pieces, and when I change the direction, it keeps not being right.
Yesterday I was sanding a 2 cm wide piece and right at the center of the belt it ate nothing but when I put the piece at either end of the belt it ate quite a bit. Take small amounts of material off, don't turn the crank a quarter turn at a time like you do with a planner. If you do it will pop the circut breaker. That's not a defect, that's operator error.
