Makes me wonder if that is why it freely swings left to right unless I really bear down on the adjustment bolts. I have also read tearing it apart can be a challenge. Two positions are necessary because the blade is offset from the swivel axis. A sharper blade will be more efficient for the motor.

If your motor keeps stalling then it might be warning you that the time for replacement is near. There are really not too many problems that you can have with your radial arm saw motor. You can replace a few of the parts over time, and make sure that you are cutting with a sharp blade, but when the time comes for replacement you may just need to give in.
