You keep saying photocopy. Photo copy means on photo paper? Tried this with a actual photo on photo paper but the image will not transfer due to the plastic layers on the photo paper.

Joe, we state in the supply list and instructions that you need a photocopied image on regular copy paper. A photocopy does not mean it is printed on photo paper. This will not work with a photo print. Go to any office supply store or your local library should have a photocopy machine and will print on regular copy paper.

This transfer technique works because a Laser Printer was used vs. You could replicate the same results using either an at home laser printer or going to kinkos or another place that has a laser printer available for printing.

I think everyone is confused by what a photocopier is. You basically have to make a copy of your picture on a color copier that you would normally find in an office.

Will it still turn out? Is it better to put the transfer medium directly on the wood and then lay the picture flat? If it is just a small area I think you will be fine. Just make sure it dries completely before you rub the paper off. I tried a Walgreen photo and it has several paper and plastic layers. Ultimately last plastic layer holds the picture as you try to pull it off it brings parts of the picture with it leaving a mess. Rolando, you cannot use a regular printed photo on photo paper.

Use a UV stabilized clear coat. Home Depot and Lowes carry them in paint on and spray. Hello, Try practicing on smaller pieces of wood and use a LOT of transfer medium. Let it dry overnight or for about hours. Smaller projects will need less time. Make sure you do not over-wet the image when going to remove the paper. Hope this helps! A local printer or office supplies store should be able to help!

I would then lay your boards flat and arranged how they will be displayed. Make sure they are secured in place before applying the photo. Another idea would be to cut your image into strips to fit each slat of wood and apply them individually.

Hi, I have started this project to make something special for my family. I just want to know what type of wood you use because the picture looks great but then seems to fade away quickly. I even left the picture on for 2 days and removed and it stayed on a little longer but still faded after a while. Is there any way to correct this?

Whitewash the wood first or apply gel medium to the wood first and let it dry before gluing the photo to the wood? Or will that prevent the photo from transferring properly? IF you would actually like the white areas of a photo to transfer as white and not transparent where the wood shows through , apply an even coat of a lighter gel medium to the wood first, let it dry completely, and then proceed with the other steps.

However, the gel medium does not dry completely clear so be careful to only apply it to the area of the wood where the photo will be placed unless you intend to paint over the area around the photo. Time well spent to avoid wasting money. I read that there is a Mod Podge for applying photos that will leave the background of your photo white as well. What if I want to do old family pictures would I have to scan and print them out on printer paper?

Hi Christine — yes, you need to use regular printer paper, photo paper will not work. For best results, you need to have a photocopy of the image, not a printed image. Yes, I believe you might be able to, it might just be a bit of mucking around. If you scan the image of the recipe first onto your computer, reverse the image and then photocopy the reversed image. Then when you place it downwards it will print onto the wood the correct way out. Hope this helps, please let us know if this works!

It seems that if you can mirror the image before you photocopy it, that should make the words appear correctly. Bill is correct. It definitely came in handy when I wanted to learn how to transfer an image to wood using Mod Podge. I know this actually by accident, because at first I used Mod Podge Acrylic Sealer Matte since I had some left over from another project. It gave me the results I wanted, where the wood grain showed through. Then when I read that I had to use the Mod Podge Photo Transfer Medium, we went and bought some, and it did not yield the same results, as it leaves an opaque white layer beneath.

Do NOT use an ink jet printer. The photo needs to be copied from a photocopier machine. Regular copy paper needs to be used — not photo paper. For best results, use a photocopied image from a photocopy machine.

Do not use your home printer. What I would appreciate knowing is the photo medium… Was this a photo paper copy, an inkjet or laser printed copy?

Photocopier Printing Process: A traditional photocopier prints using the xerographic process, which uses a series of positive and negative electrical charges to transfer the image.

Negatively charged toner is spread over a drum containing the image of the document, where the dark areas of the document are positively charged. The toner adheres only to the positively charged area. The negatively charged toner image is then transferred to a piece of paper that has been positively charged. The toner is then fused to the paper using heat, making the image permanent.

They start by receiving the document data in a digital format. Photocopies can be made at office supply stores Staples, Office Max, etc. For best results, use a photocopy. Toner will not smudge the way ink would so this does make sense.

So yes there is a difference between a photocopier and a laser printer… a laser print prints an image from your computer onto paper with toner. There may be a difference in the quality of paper or toner in a home scanner that would effect the wood transfer, but that I have not done a comparison on yet.

I wish I could get this to work. I would like to know the type of paper and the model printer. Does your printer have white toner capability? Other than that, the only other possible reason for white transfer would have to be the medium you chose to print on before transferring it to wood. Its possible a matt or gloss finished paper was the reason.

I have a HP cpnw color laser printer I used normal printer paper and Modpod photo transfer medium. If the color of the paper was some other color, then that would have been the resulting color in the non-printed areas remaining. I used the photo transfer on an image and was not happy at all with my results. Nat, for this tutorial, a photocopy is highly recommended.

Because the image in the demonstration is placed on the wood face down, so naturally the image will be reversed. To keep transferred project from being backwards have it printed in mirror image. The instructions on the transfer medium state you need to use a commercial copier.

Home printers use water soluble inks. If you want white areas to show white-paint the board white first. Will the background color of my image transfer as well? It is a saying and not a an actual photo. But the background is a distressed beige and the font is black. I am doing it on a stained piece of wood. On 20lb bond paper from a laser printer. So I am hoping the background will appear so the wording will be legible!

Thanks for any help! I just finished my image transfer onto a stained stacking table! The image came out perfectly and the end results are perfect! I also discovered that if you moisten the paper with warm water not drench after it has dried, it is easier to remove the paper from the work surface. Be careful not to rub over one area for too long, as it will rub the image off of the surface! Time and patience are key to this project, and thank God I have just enough of both!

I tried doing this twice, and they both turned out the same…once I had thought I rubbed all the paper off, it still leaves a really foggy film over the entire picture. It rubbed off relatively easy, I was using my fingers, then I noticed a towel went much faster.

Once transferred, they show the grain of the wood through as it would if you used regular Mod Podge… but the Mod Pod Photo transfer formula dries white, not clear!!!! Your post is misleading and I will now have to use an alternative method which requires another trip to the store.

If you did in fact use the Mod Podge Photo Transfer Medium, you may want to try this project again to see if the result is the same. Maybe they changed the formula??? This project is nearly two years old, so the product may have changed. If you have regular Mod podge, use that. As Kim says it does not dry transparent, it dries as a white plastic and the background will not show through.

My daughter and I have spent 2 days and money attempting to make a Mothers day gift on wood to have the grain show through similar to yours. As Morena mentioned in the comment above, the project and product used is years old. The manufacturer may have changed the Mod Podge transfer formula since then. A photocopied image is suggested for this tutorial — we are not sure how a laser printed image works. Along with the type of copy, the paper thickness may affect the results.

BUT — is the krylon enough to seal out water? I want to transfer a photo to a serving tray AND — could I print the image on a color laser printer and use that? This may have been asked, sorry if I missed the answer….. Yes you can make it on your own printer to look how ever you want, then make the photo copy of it so that it transfers correctly. I have used actual laser paper with the laser copier and I have had issues. Should I be using regular printing paper with the laser copier instead?

Also, I have painted over the messed up pictures. Do you think I could try the picture on the painted side? The only Mod Podge I bought was this photo transfer medium. Everything was going fine when I started rubbing the paper, but the white parts of the paper were not transparent like I thought they would be.

It looks like everywhere I put Mod Podge, regardless of whether or not there was ink on the paper, stuck to the wood. Now I have this ugly looking picture with a white blob all around it. Do I have to let it dry overnight?

What will make the white parts become transparent? The paper sticks to the transfer medium so if the paper was white then the white will transfer. Can you trim off the excess before you transfer?

In the picture of the children in the car, how does the background behind the children and the bright sky rub off to show the wood? I believe you need to trim that white border all away before you start your transfer.
