However, that doesn't work very well if you are using plywood given you sand through the first ply easy and then it is no longer as asthetic. Solid hardwood is best but then you will spend more. I would also suggest practicing with the half blind template given there are less steps involved and it actually does look pretty nice.

Keep in mind there are template guides that need to be compatible with your router. Make sure you research if your router is compatible and if not you may have to break down and buy another one. Give it a little patience and time and you'll be a pro at this. Read the included owners manual, then read it again; finally read it one more time.

After reading and rereading, set it up and get after some of those left over scraps from past projects. Patience and practice will have you cutting beautiful joints. My very first half blind I cut in scrap maple was perfect. My first through dovetail cut in scrap poplar was laughable at best. Sometimes it just takes patience. Don't expect an Omni Jig or a Leigh. This is not that. But it is serviceable after some trial and error. A tiny alignment problem here can make it almost impossible to get the template to sit flat on the horizontal workpiece or sacrificial backing board, which makes the whole device basically useless, but once it was fixed I got acceptable results immediately.
