I've been looking around for a 4K tv for a month or so now and every time I think I see a decent review and decent price with hdr, I'll google it along with 'bit panel' - and it'll be 8-bit.

Now I'm kinda advised that I should avoid 8-bit panels but it's hard to shop around on websites and Argos etc when none of the parameters are 8,10,12 bit panels. Anyone got any ideas? There are tv's with 10 bit panels without it and there are tv's with 8 bit panels with it.

Its the reproduction of colour in the rec colour space that defines how good a tv is at displaying HDR colour and for that it needs a wide colour gamut. Tomsonman Active Member. It's true that 10bit displays have much more potential at diplaying HDR content, but as Dodge has pointed out it doesnt come for granted.

There are some 8bit models that handles HDR better than 10bit models but when you have a very good 8bit vs 10bit panels, that both have good panel caracteristics brightness, blacks, contrast, WideColorGamut, screen uniformity, good color coverage, local dimming and good video processing the 10bit panel will give much better resoults than 8bit panel.
