It's interesting that you did that with just those little blades, that would never have occurred to me to do so. When I have to make grooves like that I use rasps and files. You did a really nice job of it with the knives, I must say.
Say Alan dont you cast Silver alloy onto your wooden handles? Go to your local plumbing supply store and buy a roll of lead-free plumbing solder.
The rest is tin. That's what I use. Honestly, in my opinion, it takes just as much time and patience to do it right with a file or rasp as it does with a carving chisel or knife, it just depends on what your more comfortable with.
You'd be surprised. If it's got cadmium in it, avoid like a plague of zombies. I wouldn't want to make a large fancy thin crossguard Yellow Wood Knife Handles out of it, but for bolsters and such it's hard enough. You can't mark it with a fingernail. Sorry about the pics that are abit blury These are the kniveds i made from saw mill blade very hard stuff even when its been eneeled This is the wood ill be using,its called Southern Rata,a New Zealand native hard wood Its unbelievably hard stuff In this pic i started out carving the finger groves out.
