This is my first dust collector, and as such, I have no frame of reference in which to compare it. However, I will say that it is much quieter than the Shop-Vac I was using for dust collection which burned up after just one year of intermittent use and it moves a much higher volume of air. It doesn't have the same type of suction of a Shop-Vac, but it does pull more dust and shavings than a Shop-Vac. I have paired the collector with the Trash Can Cyclone Lid and a 30 gallon metal garbage can, and I have to say it works exceptionally well.
The combination has definitely exceeded my expectations. Although I am pleased with the collector, especially at the current sale price, there are three gripes I have about the machine. I'm not crazy about the way the bag attaches to the machine. Most of the machines I looked at just used a clamp to hold the bag to output port, the Rikon bag uses a strap and buckle along with a clamp.
The combination of the strap and clamp makes it somewhat awkward to install the bag and causes the bag to have a slight kink when it inflates. This does not seem to affect the operation of the collector and is only an annoyance when first installing the bag.
However, the bag does have a nice wide zippered opening that makes it easy to dump out chips and dust. The dust funnel is a good idea, and I have used it to pull sanding dust from a belt sander and as a floor sweep. That is when I am able to get the hose to stay on it.
The inlet port of the funnel is slightly larger in diameter than other dust collection fittings. The quick connect fitting I use will not fit over the port, and wrestling the hose on it is an exercise in frustration. I don't count this as a knock against Rikon, since I think they source these from a different manufacturer. And I think it's safe to say it's the same manufacturer that supplies funnels to WoodCraft as the funnels in the store exhibited the same problem.
I'm going to try lightly sanding the outside of the inlet port and see if that helps. The white impeller cover flange or inlet flange or whatever you want to call has no gasket between it and the housing of the collector. I discovered this when I noticed fine dust building up on the outside of the housing between the screws on the flange.
I remedied this by removing the flange, and adding a strip of foam insulation along the diameter of the flange. Since installing the insulation, I have noticed no new dust build up and I think slightly better suction. I checked the impeller while I had it apart, and from what I can tell, the impeller is fairly thick steel and seems to be heavy duty, at least for an entry level collector.
In conclusion, I give this unit four stars, despite the fact I haven't used it very much since I received it. I would give the unit five stars had it not been for the damaged hose, the lack of a gasket, and other minor frustrations. Due to my current set-up, I needed a unit that was portable, drew less than 15 amps, and had sufficient air flow.
So for the money I find it to be a capable collector, especially for my needs. However, if I hadn't found this on sale, I would have purchased the Powertec and used the money I saved on shipping Prime to purchase a dust hose and other accessories.
If used with only the supplied 9', 4"diameter hose this is an excellent product. However, the addition of a smaller extension hose, or use with a dust deputy will cause a rapid decrease in the suction power. This arrangement works well, except that the shop vac is VERY noisy. I had hope to just replace the shop vac with the Rikon dust collector and give my ears a break.
However, the Rikon unit moves a large volume of air, it lacks sufficient pressure to maintain it's flow with any connection less than 4''.
This is NOT the fault of this machine. It operates very quietly and performs very well if the 4" hose is connected directly to a single machine. The only reason I didn't give it 5 stars is because it didn't work for my application. I just expected to much!
Got it yesterday, assembled it after supper, used it ripping Baltic birch plywood on a 10" contractor saw today. Nicely packaged, no damage. Easy assembly, just look at the illustrations and read thru the instructions first, there is an option for wall mounting it or putting it on casters and you want do decide before you start.
I find it very quiet, a low hum rather than the ear plugs mandatory scream of a shopvac. Build quality is good as far as I can see. It all fits and works and is nicely finished. I had some dust come up from my throat plate on the saw, but nothing like without dust collection. Mine has the easy empty bag with the zipper, I suspect all the newer ones do. I plan to connect it to one tool at a time, I don't think it would support a central system, too much vacuum loss for a 1 HP blower.
Lots of them out there, I got the Veritas brand. I waited till my lid came, installed it on a metal trash can and hooked it up. Total fail. With two hoses the funnel would not even pick up loose dust when used as a vacuum wand, you could barely feel a draft with your hand.
Plan B, removed the second hose and taped over the second port reducing the system to a single inlet. Ran a piece of mahogany thru the planer several times to thickness it and the in line dust separator managed to corral most of chips and dust and keep it out of the bag, but the bench got pretty covered and the infeed side spewed a lot of chips also. It did an acceptable job, but the amount of chips from the planer is more than it can handle.
It did a good job on the saw, you could turn the saw on and see dust moving toward the saw blade and being sucked down, although some dust does escape. My experience is that it is not capable of supporting the vacuum loss caused by using a dust separator in the line at full efficiency, but it is enough to make the chips and dust from a planer manageable if you don't mind vacuuming the surrounding area after you are done.
I will make a stand and it will get used in front of the open garage door in the future. I still consider it a good value, but with the caveat that you have to adjust your expectations to match the price and be prepared to live with the limitations.
I bought the dust collector for use at my midi lathe. I mounted it on the four casters that are supplied. That helps on a midi lathe because if the work piece is longer than 9", I can wheel the dust collector to where I am getting the maximum effect.
Damage on the box corresponded to damage on the protective shroud, but the shroud did its job and protected the blades of the fan underneath. Movement was impeded by the dent, so I had to remove the shroud and beat it back into shape. There was also rusty-looking dust inside the box, that looks like it blew in through the damage on the box. There was also some small holes where the hose was pressed against the dust collector when packed.
Besides all that, it works great for lathe work. I left the metal pole attached to the funnel, and just put a rare-earth magnet harvested from an old hard drive on the lathe to attach it. And if that's not enough, OSHA classifies wood dust as a known carcinogen. Besides those health issues, accumulation of dust also poses safety and fire hazards. Sawdust can make a floor slippery and can catch fire if hit by a stray spark.
It can decrease the quality of your woodworking, too, by wearing on your tools and preventing you from keeping the stock in constant contact with the cutter.
