Google how to get your chisels scary sharp. I know Paul Sellers has good tutorials on YouTube and he does it with cheap hardware store ones. I got a set of 3 old Stanley yellow handled chisels from eBay. I hope these guys and sharpen up nicely with proper form. They will, I have some Stanley fatmax chisels I use for most of my projects. I use a piece of granite floor tile, sandpaper up to grit, a piece of leather and stropping compound to sharpen my chisels.
I work with mostly pine since I'm a budget builder so they have to be sharp. Not necessary really. You only need to really sharpen the very top.
Make sure the last half inch or so on the back is completely flat sutmpy. Flat to the highest grit you have.
Then sharpen the front, and just the last millimeter or so. The wood doesn't really care how long the polished portion is, just that the front and back meet at a perfectly sharp point. You can do all that easily with water stones.
The videos I watched never mentioned only sharpening the last bit. I was trying to sharpen the whole polished end! The entire bevel must be given attention, that is the the beveled front face and the back face. Sharp is two polished edges meeting at a point. The very tip of the edge can have an extra little treatment, its called a micro-bevel. Flip it over. The factory grind angle is now your new best friend. Consistently holding this angle as you draw across the stone until a burr forms on the edge will have you on your way.
Creating a burr on the edge is the fundamental requirement to getting anything sharp, knives etc. Can confirm the Paul Sellers videos on Youtube are great. His hand plane videos will get you inspired as well. Be careful sharpening can be become very addictive and you won't rest until everything in the house is sharp. Oh ya one more thing. Practice, practice and practice that's the only way stumph get better. Once you get good at sharpening, a slow speed grinder can be worth it.
If you aren't getting anywhere with a whetstone inife to a skill issue, you're going to do a whole lot more damage very quickly with a grinder. After you can reliably get a chisel to do things like this, then think about what a grinder would do stumpy nubs marking knife 03 you.

Just get a couple decent stones and take it slow. Get em mirror finish. A marking knife might help too. Get a good knife wall and work to that. But even a sharp knif knife can do it to start.
