I was able to do a few runs without any major problems, right after assembling the thing. So that's good! And the results were nice; especially with the flat bit my kit came with a set of V bits which are useful for detailed engravings, but they leave a lot of "fuzzy" cuts. I learned a lot about CNC machining. I'm not at all disappointed; overall it exceeded my expectations. That's the good; now for the not so good. Obviously, this is a cheap machine, and so with it came compromises.

A lot of compromises. The instructions were not good. Passable, but they basically just show you 5 pictures and you have to figure out how everything goes together. Various pieces aren't even listed in the contents section.

The kit comes dirty; grease, aluminum shavings, mysterious yellow stains, you name it. It makes assembly a mess. Bring lots of towels. You're on your own for figuring out how to do CAM to get your own designs programmed for this thing. I'm sure there's lots of CAM software out there, but finding something that works out of the box for this specific CNC machine was challenging. This kit comes with the spindle already assembled. Apparently older versions of this required you to press fit the spindle together.

So that's helpful. Just one problem I almost forgot to check those, because it came pre-assembled. Lord only knows what would have happened if I turned on the spindle with those screws loose. Speaking of set screws, this kit does not come with any threadlocker. So the set screws come out I had a coupler come loose after just two hours of use.

And let me tell you, it's not fun having to cram your hands into the assembled machine to try and loosen the motors so you can reattach a coupler. Do yourself a favor and use some threadlocker when assembling this thing. Overall, I'm happy; it engraved wood both hard and soft just fine.

Seems like it could do some wood milling without any problems too; some of my engravings were 4mm deep and it had no issue 0. You're getting what you pay for, but it's at least good bang for buck. To set the stage, I have always been intrigued by CNC machines but have never touched or assembled one.

I AM, however, very familiar with 3D printers and the overall mechanics seemed similar. I have been absolutely blown away with the quality construction and ease of use!

Assembly - assembly was easy; just take your time and watch one of the assembly videos available on YouTube. The included manual is straightforward, but watching the video helped me determine little things like which way the frame pieces needed to be oriented to get the bearings in the correct places, etc. The manual reminded me of an Ikea furniture assembly guide - lots of pictures! There were metal shavings from cutting the aluminum extrusions and some of the threads on the bolts were dirty, so I used canned area to remove all of the shavings and pre-screwed the bolts into the threads.

Build quality - this thing is sturdy! When I opened the box and saw the layers of parts, I was terrified that it would feel flimsy and be difficult to install. I took my time and it feels like a much more expensive piece of equipment.

There are plenty of CNC options out there, but SainSmart seems to have great quality control and really cares about customer experience. I think my only suggestion would be to include a couple extra pieces of assembly hardware bolts, T-nuts, etc just in case anything is damaged or missing, but I had everything I needed for a good assembly.

You bring down the Z-axis bit tip level with your material, select the gcode file the test files are all. Since there are no limit switches, it considers it's starting point "home", so it is easy to just move to a clean piece of wood to start another model. I haven't figured out making my own gcode files, but that certainly isn't anything to do with the machine, and as you can see in the pictures, it accurately carves the test files.

Overall this thing is awesome. For now it is time to learn Easel so I can make my own files. Happy to help if anyone has questions about this CNC machine. Images in this review. Top reviews from other countries.

Saw lots of good online reviews for this one so decided to give it a try. Parcel came within 2 days thanks to Amazon Prime. Unpacking and set up took about 3 hours. All parts are nicely bagged and even comes with all the tools you need. Instructions are pretty basic, just an exploded view of each section of the machine. No numbering of which steps to show what should be done first.

Because of this I had to take apart a couple pieces that I had already done in order to install some other piece. And I put a couple things on backwards. There are lots of good videos on YouTube to help you out in case you are a little unsure. One thing on this machine is that the collet is pre-mounted to the motor spindle. In all the videos it shows you having to heat the collet and then force it onto the spindle.

Electrical bits were just as easy to install. The board has the sockets marked for each plug. Once everything is ready you plug the USB into your computer and it will ask for the driver that is on the mini CD or online at their web page. You then install the controller program and away you go!

There are a few examples on the CD to try out. And once again there are lots of YouTube videos to show you how to set-up the machine to properly cut your design. I've done a few tests including the examples and a couple of my own creations. Most worked fine, but a few glitches that were my fault and not that of the machine.

Pros: Great starter machine, lots of info and videos on YouTube to help you. Lots of "hacks" to upgrade your machine if you want to in the future. I sent an email to SainSmart and they replied the next day saying that my machine was still under warranty. They figured it was a bad power supply and sent me a new one by DHL, arrived in 5 days from China.

This didn't fix my problem so another email and the next day an updated motherboard and spindle was once again sent by DHL, arriving within 5 days.

Excellent after sales service, emails were promptly answered within 12 hrs and replacement parts were quickly sent by courier, no questions asked. Amazon's Choice for "cnc router".
