make-a-picture-frame-with-a-router-map A nice oak picture frame seemed like a good project. This can be done easily in an afternoon and really only requires a table saw and a router table. Materials. I got some oak, picture frame glass, and a backing board with stand. The materials required are pretty basic. First, of course, pick a picture frame size; I went with 8× You can pick up standalone replacement glass for standard sizes at just about any crafts store. If you wanted, you could also cut up some acrylic from a hardware store instead. As far as a backing board, I looked at making one, but it wasn’t worth it. Getting some a. Make a picture frame with a router map scratch map is a great way to keep track of your adventures around the world! Check out my post on 10 tips to create aewsome DIY wall art for your picture frames. This picture frame is a great example of how versatile routers can be. Once you start making picture frames with a router, you may never cut a miter again. This story originally appeared in American Woodworker Marchissue To add a bit of detail to the front of the walnut pieces I used a chamfer bit to ease the edges.

The DIY picture frame can be used for all sorts though, photos, paintings, shadow boxes, lots of possibilities. Not just for following where you have been on your travels around the world. First step in this project is to resaw the walnut to size. You can of course buy wood ready planed to the size you want but I had this piece of walnut knocking around for over a year now so it was best to use it up.

American Black Walnut has beautiful grain and colour to it. I planed the walnut to roughly 35mm x 45mm. This should give me nice proportions for the frame to the scratch map.

Speaking of the scratch map. It needs to be mounted to a board before going in the frame. I used a piece of 6mm MDF.

I aligned the map to a line I marked on the board and clamped it in place. I could then fold the map back and apply spray adhesive to the board. The clamps ensure the map stay aligned correctly. I then lowered the map slowly onto the adhesive. Making sure there were no bubbles or wrinkles in the map. Then it was just a case of removing the clamps and doing the same to the other side of the map.

I marked a 10mm boarder around the scratch map and cut it to size using a handsaw. The handsaw allows me to make sure the map doesn't get scratched or scuffed.

With the map adhered to the MDF and cut to size I could turn my attention back Make A Picture Frame With A Router Setup to the frame itself. In order to set the map into the frame I needed to remove some material. I marked a 20mm square on the end of a walnut piece. This will be my guide for what needs to be removed. Using a straight cutting bit in the router table I nibbled away at the material that needed to be removed.

I did this on all 4 pieces of walnut. Remember to place one on the top and on the side , in case you decide to later use your DIY picture frame in a different orientation later! Using grit sandpaper, sand the custom picture frame, Make A Picture Frame With Kreg Jig Index paying particular attention to the corners where it can be a little sharp.

Otherwise, if you apply wood stain over glue, it will leave blotchy spots! Just a helpful tip. To secure the back, I used a light-duty stapler to staple into the edge of the wood in the back, which was enough to hold the cardboard and checklist inside.

All those pieces of artwork that hubby has stashed in the closet can now be framed. Check out my post on 10 tips to create aewsome DIY wall art for your picture frames.

I used a layer of white on the frame, covered with a second coat of light blue, then lightly distressed the DIY picture frame. Did you enjoy this tutorial?

George Vondriska teaches Make A Picture Frame With Glass 90 you a great way to refurbish the push pads you use in your workshop.

Instead of just tossing your old push pads out, George recommends cutting off the rubber padding from the bottom of the pad, and screwing the plastic handle to a piece of scrap wood, which you can turn into…. Most people think you can only use a panel saw to crosscut sheet stock.

Today in the workshop, though, George Vondriska demonstrates some of the handy woodworking techniques you can employ with a combination panel saw and router machine. You can crosscut and make repetitive cuts on large sheets of plywood like you would on…. It is possible to mount a router bit incorrectly in your router collet, and that can spell disaster for your woodworking project.

George Vondriska shows you how to properly insert and clamp router bits into your router.
