I had to call and get the store to decide what adaptor I needed. They had one and graciously mailed it to me.

Sent off an email to Nova to get advise as to the best compatible Nova for my lathe. Nova VP responded with G3 would be best. I took advantage of Woodcraft's sale and have not looked back. I use it everyday. Can't go wrong with this Chuck for the price when it includes all the additional jaws.

Remember you still have to buy an insert, however, you still come out ahead. Do not really have a need for all the jaws at this point in time, but nice to have when I do.

This is a must have for the Midi. All of the jaws had severe burrs from manufacture which was easily remedied. But they do not run true as they should. Still a good deal for the "special package" price. The biggest problem with this chuck is that it makes several other of my chucks obsolete. This is my first gear action chuck my others are all bar operated and it's really a joy to use.

Apparently they have a current quality issue. I bought one from Amazon and it was defective. I contacted Teknatool and they sent me a replacement that has exactly the same issue.

The key is difficult to turn and the chuck will not close all the way. I've attached a pictures showing the good chuck I bought 6mo ago closes all the way and the bad chucks I've received recently.

Does what it says on the tin. I'm using this on a Harbor Freight and it required no adapters. Direct fit - super easy. Seems very accurate as well. Nicely made chuck but not made to use on my Jet VS lathe. Although the threads match up and it spins on my spindle easily it does not have a nut to use to tighten it on the spindle like my Nova G3 insert chuck does and it requires screwing in a grub screw in order to safely operate it in reverse.

Problem there it is apparently designed to fit only on a Nova Comet II lathe spindle, if you tighten the grub screw on my lathe it will chew into the spindle threads and damage them.

I neither wanted to have the chuck fly off the spindle because I couldn't apply a wrench to tighten it on the spindle nor wanted to damage my spindle threads to operate it in reverse. So, I returned it. Needs to be made more clear in the product description it will only fit Nova Comet II lathe. I hope those commenters who said it works fine on their non-Nova lathes stay safe.

This is a chuck for a wood lathe. I was happy with the product, it was doing an excellent job. I began to notice it took more energy to open and close the chuck. Normally it was effortless to open or close. I was referred to a rep with nova, who gave me instructions on what to do. I disassembled the chuck per his instructions , sent the photos to him. You have all the communications between the two of us, a part was stripped from one of the parts, this is Nova G3 Wood Turning Lathe Chuck System a precision piece of tooling, i felt I should have sent it to nova for a closer look but he decided to send one part to put this item back in first class shape.

I assembled it. It is tight in some spots and loose in I have no problem with the name brand, i have purchased other items from them. You should not have this issue with quality chucks. Of course with run out at the spindle, it gets magnified the farther you move away from the spindle towards the tail stock. Another thing to consider is the quality of the lathe itself and that many lower priced wood lathes are not machines to the specs of a top quality machine There is Nova Wood Lathe Chuck Accessories 70 slop where the tailstock fits between the ways.

There is often play in the tailstock quill when the quill lock is loosened such as when drilling or turning for that matter It is there for a purpose. Manufacturers can keep the costs down when tolerances are not as tightly machined. As for chuck jaws, I would expect to see variances in tolerances as scroll chucks have multiple moving parts and the jaws are not machined on the actual Chuck you receive.

They are machined separately. Some jaw sets are machined and cut into quadrants and numbered so they can go back together the same way. Non numbered jaws may have more variances. Hope this helps! I have searched the forums and found all of the suggestions posted elsewhere. Here's the Nova G3 Lathe Chuck 45 bullet point list: No adapter as the chuck is 1 x 8 and my spindle is 1 x 8. No washer. Jaws are seated in the corrects slots - checked over and over.

Read the manual for attaching the jaws just to make sure. But I must say, that wasn't all that clear. Everything cleaned as well as I can do.

Things look and feel OK. I'm content that this is not an expensive lathe and there will be looser tolerances. I had found out of round issues turning pen blanks for various reasons so when I can see the wobble I get nervous. I guess the underlying question in my OP is the procedure for troubleshooting and acceptable tolerances vs expectations. Thanks again for the responses. Better drill chuck? Click to expand Dehn Member. I use a brass brush to clean the mating surfaces really well. A couple of times I have placed a piece of grit sandpaper on a flat glass surface granite surface plate would be better and lightly sanded the mating surface on the chuck.

It has helped a little. I have been wandering into the metal lathe corners of the internet where tolerances are a bit tighter, but 1 to 2 thou on the body of the chuck is pretty common even with higher quality metal lathes. The runout of the spur center isn't great, but easily could be the center - maybe try a dead center as they are probably more precisely machined a dial test indicator on the inside of the morse taper is probably the correct way to check.

The Nova G3 is a well respected wood scroll chuck, I doubt you'll find a woodturning scroll chuck that performs significantly better. In metal turning they often use a 4-jaw independent jaw chuck.

With this style each jaw is manipulated independently which allows you to compensate for some of the errors and get bang on. I haven't seen any woodturners use them, but I don't see why it wouldn't work for holding mandrels and such. I imagine they are not very effective for holding softer workpieces like wood. Also may be able to find one on ebay used that is already set up 1x8 tpi. Use some caution with holding the drill chuck in the MT of the headstock.

Radial forces will pop the MT out and the chuck will go flying super not safe - don't ask me how I know. You can use a draw bar to secure it in place, but I've never done this so can't offer any details.

For the price of these nylon bushes is well worth to get a couple and try them out. Cheers George. As for chucks, most pros use either Vicmarc or OneWay. I happen to have OneWay Talon chucks as well as their Stronghold for larger work.

These require an insert but the insert attaches differently than the screw in inserts used by Nova. As for drill chucks, my preference is a keyed chuck. I almost always drill with the drill chuck in the tailstock. If drilling from the headstock, I use a draw bar as already mentioned.
