I'm not sure I have an answer for that. In my opinion, art has more to do with the end product than with the tools used to produce it. As long as the techniques used to produce a carving bear more than a passing resemblance to the techniques used by Janel, the Tryggs and the others, I'd call it flat plane.

I agree with you Lynn with respects to what you consider flat plane along with some others such as Trygg etc that Gene mentions. Each of those guys have their own style. Gene definitely has his own style as well. I see some carvers that their work is kind of a hybrid of the style, Mike Shipley being one.

All I know is I have tried to do it and I have to say it's one of the hardest styles to do. I think Hyungs work is fantastic and is what I would call "realistic" flat plane, it's awesome combined with excellent painting by his wife.
