Profit is the amount added to cover business expansion. At your workbench price, all of your shop costs are covered. Selling expenses consist of two calculations. This could be used to pay a sales rep, have a booth in a trade show or to advertise the table in a magazine or newspaper.
A store or gallery will mark up your wholesale price to cover their expenses. If you create a spreadsheet with your computer, you can calculate the price of many products quickly. You will only have to enter the number of hours to make a product, the salary you want to make in a year, and the cost of materials. The spreadsheet will calculate the workbench price, wholesale price and retail price instantly. Once you know the right price for your work, stick with it.

Just wanted to know how does carpenter calculate charges of their workmanship. I am bit confused in this. Do they just take front area of wardrobe i. Do they also take depth of the wardrobe wardrobe side area which is open i.
For example, lets assume x, y and z are the width, height and depth of the wardrobe and rate per sqrFt is R. I enquired about Indoline but rates there seem to be very high — psf for shutters only. Manoj: Check with the corner "Modular Kitchen" shop closest to you…. Hi Nandita, Could you please suggest who can make an aluminium framed windows like the ones we see in your pictures.
Our carpenter says he can do it on site but I seriously doubt it. Can the machine shops who work with Al profiles, sliding shutters etc do this? Mukesh: Don't do it onsite. Most shops who sell the Aluminium profiles frames would be able to do it for you It has to be machine cut.
We are looking for modular kitech done for our new house. My basic question was should be get it done from a carpenter or choose some "modular kitchen" shop line sleek, etc. If modular kitechn shop which one do you recommend which is not too costly also.
Modular kitchens made with decent quality materials should usually be upwards of 2 Lacs. Informative articles here! Couple of queries on the estimates. Say for wardrobe they charge and for loft Is it because there is less woodwork in the loft? Maybe this question is vague!!! Most designers do not do per square foot calculations as costs vary dramatically based on the design and the material used.
Most Carpenters however will give you psft rates — loft rates quoted are less for Framed lofts i. Same applies for wardrobe cost — the more the drawers the higher the cost. Again goes to prove that psft is not the best way to do costing. Can you please let me know how relevant are these rates today?
Is there an increase or decrease in prices that it has been over a year since you have posted this? Also can you let me know if you take up interior designing work? Some rates have increased while the others have fallen.
I do take up interior projects, you can reach me at nanditamanwani gmail. One question : is it more cost effective to source own wood and get a carpenter to do things or get everything done by one source like interior designer..
What are the pros and cons of each.. My view may be biased as I am from the same field. Designs 2. Expertise that the designer brings in 3. Risk a against fake material, b against the workers abandoning you mid way c any mess up that needs rework 4.
Thanks for a very Informative blog that gets into the details which really helps people like me who are planning to go for such works. Do you think this rate is bit high or OK?? Krishna — It will be unethical for me to comment on someone else's costing, especially without knowing what assumptions have been made.
Hi Nandita, very informative article.. Remember this is just the labour component. Factory made "material" cost is usually higher than the landed cost of hand made stuff. That said — factory made has its own limitations as you cannot execute all kinds of designs.
Really appreciate your efforts in replying to the questions. I am planning to do wood work for our home in whitefield on a budget. I am a new bee dont know anything about carpenter work. I have seen his work and he does a decent job.. Is it worth going for two side laminated machine wardrobe. Please suggest some good wholesale places where I can buy material. Also some good tips to do woodwork on budget at the same time Quality ones.
The rates you mention are the correct ongoing rates for basic woodwork Machine made woodwork will be more expensive than hand made Material prices are more or less the same everywhere — check out shops closest to your site and buy from there — you will save on transportation costs. Appreciate your prompt response.
As suggested will go through the posts.. Also could u please suggest some good shops to buy material in Whitefield. Thanks again. My carpenter is suggesting to go for Pine wood for the wardrobes. He also mentions that, Pine wood is the best for wardrobes as it can never get attacked by termites. I have seen his work and the quality and the finishing looks good.
I just want to know ,what specifications or details should i ask about the wood to him so that i can trust on the quality. Any further info on the same would be of great help.
I don't recommend using Pinewood for interiors. A lot of folks use it because it is cheap, however it has low resistance to warping and the quality in general is not appropriate for interior applications like kitchens, wardrobes etc. Hi Nandita, Very informative blog. I'm greeting wOodwork done from a carpenter ,but would like edge banding and limitation done using a machine, but carpenter says it is not possible. Is it possible to get machine services for these for my own material?
The factory folks may not take up one off jobs. Edge bands are nowadays available in hardware shops and can be manually pasted by the carpenter — provided he knows how to do it and wants to a number of carpenters don't. Hi Nandita, You have done a great job! I have a query related to curved class doors which can be used in the corner racks.
My carpenter says it is not possible to get the curved class door as these will be available only in china made or ready made furniture's. Is it true? Can you please guide me and suggest some best option for curved doors? My carpenter suggests hardwood with veneer melamine polish for wardrobes. What is the durability of this kind of wood work for wardrobes. Would it be better to go for laminate for wardrobes instead of veneer. It was pleasant surprise to find this website, many of my doubts and confusions got cleared after reding this.
It is like wiki podia to me. Since I understood the basics it is time for me to Wood Work Cost For 2bhk Quiz decide which type of kitchen I choose my flat, I need your suggestion or feedback regarding my choice Carcass : want to try fibre cabinets, Shutters : ply with acrylic finish, impressed with look and finish and options. Either one is OK for wardrobe shutters. I would not recommend MDF for cabinets.
Shutters are ok in Ply. Am so glad I came across this site. I am one of those lost souls in the field of carpentry with a tight budget.
There are wooden biddings that need polishing and then some kind of PVC biddings that are much pleasant, but apparantely don't have a long shelf life. Could you provide little insight on these please. The thumb-rules are already in the post above.
Exact costing can only be done based on specific designs else you run the risk of cost over runs. Some other readers have shared price quotes they got from vendors in their comments on different posts on this blog, you may want to browse through. Hi Nandita, My builder has given options of two interior vendors. Have taken the quote from both. Both the vendors have shown their previous work, which is recently completed, and they look good.
Please guide me on this. Thanks, Phani. I personally do not believe in per sqft costing as it is never accurate and constrains the designs. Two things 1.
Cost of polishing will need to be added in case of Veneer. I am planning for my Kitchen hence checking. How can I contact you to discuss further. I do take up Modular Kitchens.
You can reach me at nanditamanwani gmail. The technique for how to cost your woodwork is already in the post above. Thought I'll share some tips and tricks I learnt while finishing up my flat. Just a few minor ones, will post more if you are interested. If you are not going for the slow-motion hinges, doesn't matter — Check out the Damper Dampener from Hettich. It costs about Rs per each and works like a charm.
You can even fix it yourself, remove it from one place and put into another without disturbing the actual hinge. It's a real good invention and I'm totally in love with it. Also, for those cupboards that don't have it, I reduced the sound it makes when it shuts by pasting a small piece of rubber cut from an eraser.
At least it doesn't make the thud noise after this. Nice to see this forum once in a while. I designed it myself, employed 2 carpenters and got it done in 3 months. I used some tips here earlier as well. Thank you Nandita for keeping this alive. Hi Nandita, Can you update this page with current costs? A lot of people go through these pages to make sense of what should be done and how the meet our specs within the budget and it will be really helpful to all of us. Brand- Kitply. The Sqft rates will change if in case any other brand other than mentioned above is used.
Main frame: 19mm plywood Backing for all boxing structures: 6mm plywood. Shutters: 19mm block board. Drawers: 12mm plywood. Hinges: Ebco Brand. Telescopic channels: Ebco Brand. While per square foot costing is widely prevalent in the market I strongly believe that costing should be done specific to a particular design OR the design should be created based on a certain overall budget else it leads to budget creep or heartburn later.
Iam planning to do my new flat wooden work. Please go through the specs and prices offered by vendors whether i am on right path or i need to change something from specs and the prices are expensive. Exposed surfaces will be of 18mm thick exterior grade mdf. Internal carcasses will be of 18mm thk. Back panel will be of 8mm thk. Inside drawer will be having facia in prelaminated mdf. All unexposed surfaces will be of prelaminated mdf. All iron mongery will be from our standard range.
Suspension Brackets and plastic legs etc. Handles : As per the samples provided. Hinges : Imported Auto close. Hettich Channels : Imported Sliding channel. Laminate : Merino, Shades available as per the samples. All PVC foils are considered of E thk wood grain finish. Hi Nandita, Kudos for your dedication. Can you please say is this a good specification to goahead.
Thanks in advance. Shutters of Postforming type with laminate as per choice by client of SF finish from Merino or Greenlam. Frame Material of thickness mm in 18 mm coomercial Hardwood Plywood both side laminated using 0. Hi Nandita, You are an exceptional guide. Really appreciate your effort. My builder has given the below quote for Kitchen work.
Could you kindly examine it and give your opinion on the cost as well as the proposed materials for the job. Exposed surfaces in MDF with foil finish. Unexposed surfaces in prelaminated MDF. Unit below the sink in laminated BWP ply. Rate to include PVC skirting and Ducting. Can you please let me know the reasonable current market rate all inclusive in per sqft for following finishes.
Veneer 3. Melamine hdf 4. Metallic hdf. PSFT costing is always approximate…you can get this from your carpenter. Final costing is best done based on the design otherwise it leads to heartburn later. Madam Hi, Really good info, Thanks. My little query is i want to rent out my Flat for which i would like to go for Interior work what are the approx costs and what wood i have to ask him to go for reg 1 Kitchen 2 TV unit 3 wardrobes.
Madam just what is approx cost for laminates and veneer as on today just approx madam. I have found all your posts really helpful especially being a novice in this area. Its commendable that somebody is really taking so much interest in giving us a walkthrough about this unknown world which you experience only when you buy a home like us:- in layman's language. Would appreciate your inputs for the following querries:- Which of the ply is better Century or branded ply for JK?
Whats the price difference if any? How does price difference look between veneer and laminate? My carpenter wants to put plywood base, wouldn't these legs provide equally good support and also help keep the base clean? Yes you can use PVC legs under the Wardrobe. However if you leave them open then it may not look too pretty.
Legs are used in Kitchens to avoid "wet" contact — no such problem in bedrooms hence there is really no "need" to use legs. Hi Nandita, Please help me to understand How interiors measurements are done in Bangalore. I understand you mean costing to determine payments to carpenters since most good designers will cost based on the design and not the sqft.
The above is done based on HXW except, when you have a corner then take the Width along the wall and not the frontage. Running feet is simply the length for e. Thank you for all the inputs, going through all your inputs I feel it is more easy to go with you to design my interiors. If you feel that you can work on small house 2BHK with approximately sqft in marathahalli area bangalore, Please do get in touch with me, I am jagadish my no Hi Jagadish — you can reach me at nanditamanwani gmail.
What's your view on this idea. Regds, Rama. Hi Nandita, Thank you for you excellent blog. It's very informative. Can you provide some details about interior designing cost in bangalore.?. What will be the range to get 2D and 3D designs? Is it charged on super built up area or based on wood work area? Can you let me know some such vendors who do job work in whitefield area-thanks Rajen. I would not know any such vendors in Whitefield.
Also most factories do not entertain retail customers, even if they do it will be very painful for you to manage. Ideally let your carpenter therefore handle in case he has a connect. Hii Nandita,I done venire lamination in my office how the calculation will go for doors and counting for running feet lamination for 2 inch,4 inch, and 6inch.
Each jobwork vendor will have his own method of costing — ideally this should be discussed before giving out the work. Hi Nandita, Very informative posts. As I have understood from the some of queries and your replies to them, while preparing the cost for the wardrobe, we should only consider the height x width.
Is it applicable even if one side of the wardrobe has lamination?
