After going up through the ranks of other hot rod mods, he then went on to the usual vehicles of that time such as Capris, Escorts with Jag back. Then came the VW scene, a stint with scooters and eventually he tried a bit of drag building. You may have heard of Split Decision? Around four years ago, he decided to have another go at the American scene, and came across a Chevy COE truck on eBay.

After contacting the owner and asking a few questions, he duly paid a deposit and that weekend set off on the long drive down to Christchurch where it had been standing for quite some time. As it turned out, the owner had not quite got the description right, as it was pretty much a pile of scrap with wheels. A bit miffed but not easily deterred, Pete enquired about a Chevy Bel Air stood in the driveway behind the truck, and decided to do a deal with that instead. Well, it was better than a wasted journey.

The owner again told Pete it was all good and was in use as a daily driver. When he got back home and took a closer look it was, again, not quite as good as the description given. The floor was half missing and crudely replaced with fibreglass and after driving it for a short while the engine started to run like a bag of spanners. After spending a few days sorting the Pete found the truck advertised on the net, for sale in a field somewhere in the wilderness of Arkansas, USA.

After many emails and phone calls over a short period of time, a deal was made and the task of getting the truck to the UK began. Pete had arranged with a chap he knows to import it for him but on the way to the port the transporter they had hired broke down, leaving the Ford stranded on the side of the highway.

It was to be another four days before it could be. First impressions were all good and most of it seemed ok. It would appear the F6 was originally bought by the Coca Cola Company due to the originality of the all-over red paintwork, including under the bonnet and front wings.

Pete decided he wanted to keep all this and got a chap called Seaside Neil to come over and re-sign write letters, and then rub the new paint down to. The chassis looks as though it had been modified too, as it has been lowered and the centre shaped out, probably to take more crates.

Getting the truck how Pete wanted it was not going to be an easy task. The first thing he had to do was build a gantry system so he could remove the cab from the chassis, and after a little welding and a lot of swearing a suitable lift gear was in place and the work began. Next came the suspension. This was kindly donated by a Chevy C30 with a bit of cutting and welding and a few better-chosen swear words.

With these in place it was time to give it a motor, which is a Chevy small block coupled up to a TH auto box from a big block that had been lying around the yard. It became apparent when putting the cab back that it was going to be very difficult to work on the mechanical bits underneath, as things were a little tight. To get around this, Pete came up with the idea of making the cab tilt backwards; a bit like the reverse of a flat-nose big rig, I guess.

The beaver tail is also removable which is handy for shows and general driving about. She was in charge of rubbing down the paintwork with some grit paper so the rusty bits were smooth enough for Pete to paint the cab with clear-coat two-pack lacquer.

Consequently, many were surprised when it celebrated its 35th birthday in by being cancelled There was a long hiatus, in the middle of which Ford pulled a master stroke with their new S Mustang, a car that really harked back to the model's styling and ethos at the height of the muscle car era. Shortly afterwards came the Dodge Challenger, and there was Chevy on the side-lines For a couple of years, beginning in January , GM had been touting a 'concept' version of a possible new Camaro, based on Holden's Zeta platform.

Response was so positive that just a few months later, GM announced that it would go into production within two years as a model. In the end, it began production in Oshawa, Canada, in early as a model. On each there was an optional RS appearance package, and the Camaro's launch coincided with the new Transformers movie, in which it had a starring role, so there were limited edition Transformers packages, too.

The fifth-gen Camaro was an instant success, with dealers selling them faster than they could get them, often above sticker price. Late in the model year, a convertible was added to the range, followed a year later by 45th Anniversary editions and the mighty supercharged ZL1 with bhp.

We give each car an oil service every four or five months, and use quality oils and filters, and we've never had any major problems. The only issue we've had was with the V6 needing a new vacuum pump, but we got the part from a local supplier and it was two bolts and a wire to change.

Access is pretty easy. The clutch shares the fluid from the brake reservoir but clutch dust can get into the slave cylinder and contaminate the fluid, plus it gets very hot and the pedal gets spongy.

You can get a separate reservoir and a stainless braided clutch pipe. Modified engines won't get long out of a stock clutch. We've just fitted a six-paddle clutch, that should last Check the side repeaters, too, as many were fitted into the door mirror housing and once they got damp, they failed. The boot has quite a small opening, but the boot itself is pretty big. The space-saver spare wouldn't fit over the Brembo brakes anyway.

The V8s also have the battery in the boot. Once you start modifying for more power, they'll be too weak — you'll find the stock rear end isn't up to it. We fitted a set of cheaper pads once and they really weren't up to the job. The fly-by-wire throttle won't give you wide-open throttle until 4,rpm; a remap can cure that, and can also sharpen up the shifts on automatics. Next, you'd need aftermarket rear arms to stop the axle tramp. Some parts can be very pricey, so don't go to GM UK for parts; it's cheaper to get genuine parts from GM in America and ship them over.

There are lots of aftermarket parts for these, though; all you could imagine. They're pretty industrial — we've been hiring them out for two and a half years and we've never had any major problems that can't be attributed to driver error or abuse. They're certainly daily drivable. You can hardly throw a rod bolt without hitting a book about them. Fortunately, there are people out there digging into the lesser-known and less widelyremembered aspects of American classic motoring, such as this chap.

I reckon most of us dream of that lottery-win workshop with every tool and device we could ever need; perhaps some of you are lucky enough to be able to indulge this fantasy, but if you have all the gear and no idea, you've just spent a lot of money on some garage ornaments.

No matter what branch of fabrication or repair you're considering, there's almost certain to be a good book about it, usually from a publishing house like CarTech. Here are three examples. Of the three, the one with probably the most limited market is Power Hammers, subtitled 'The ultimate sheet metal working tool'.

They're probably right, and this book details the equipment and its use in making bespoke bodywork from steel or aluminium. For this sort of work, most of us would go for the comparatively-silent English wheel, but the power hammer is an option, and part of this book follows metalworking students making new panels for the likes of million-dollar Ferraris and Cobras. It's readable, almost entertaining, and the information could be invaluable.

I didn't expect much from the Media Blasting title, but was. The science was accessible, the methods clearly explained, and the photography clear and informative.

I learned a lot from this, even though I have no intention of buying blasting equipment; you might, too. The Weld Like a Pro book was something of a disappointment. It's a reissue of a previous title, Advanced Automotive Welding, and I'd advise beginners and garage tinkerers to look elsewhere.

It covers MIG, TIG, arc and gas welding, which is a lot for one title, and I found the science to be impenetrable and the diagrams either confusing or useless. I'd really hoped that this book would improve my frankly risible MIG skills, but all I got from it was a headache. More advanced welders might find this book to be a beacon of information, but I certainly didn't.

Converters are bloody heavy, and shouldn't just be left to hang on the input shaft, so I knocked in a little metal wedge to take the weight on the. In the town nearest my workshop, I have a go-to place for fasteners. Nuts, bolts, bearings, tools, they've always been helpful. I was shocked when they said they didn't have them, and that as they were selling out of old imperial sizes, they weren't re-ordering.

The other nearby fasteners supplier I spoke to said the same. What is the world coming to?! I began hunting around the workshop for some bolts, and after an hour of fruitless search, I came across the old cylinder head bolts from the aborted Pontiac V6 project from years ago. Instinctively I stuck my head outside and, yes, it was indeed the Camaro, so I disarmed and armed the alarm again in the hope that it might sort itself out but, unfortunately, that was wishful thinking on my part.

The guys wasted no time in strapping the Camaro onto the dyno and, after ensuring all was well, went for the power run. The Magnaflow exhaust certainly sounded great but it was the numbers I was really interested in and I waited with baited breath for the dyno printout.

The end result? Just to remind you, either way, this delightful Dodge last graced these pages quite a few years ago, as it went through a useful transformation as the Eibach demo car.

I would have a listen to his motor and help him diagnose a possible misfire at idle and low down, so we fired it up one cold, damp winter afternoon and took it out on the greasy streets of Birmingham. Between us, we could barely detect any misfire; in fact, the engine sounded gorgeous, and even when he found a clear stretch and gave it a kicking, it picked up and shot off without fuss, even though road conditions should have seen us hoofing sideways at the kerb.

Coil springs: they're not to be dicked about with. Ask anyone who's worked with a compressed coil spring that's suddenly become unexpectedly uncompressed. You don't know the meaning of sphinctertwitching fear unless you've heard a spring compressor slipping on the spring.

That's what I had here,. This is a Sealey kit for safely compressing coil springs internally, as commonly found on cars with A-arm front suspension or large rear trailing arms.

There are two pairs of yokes — one pair for up to mm diameter springs, and one pair for up to mm springs. You seat the. It's a good, heavy-duty kit that looks like it could take some abuse and put up with daily trade use, and it's damn near impossible for a spring to slip out of the compressor. It comes with two drivers, including a nice. So why couldn't I use it? Because the front springs on my Fox Mustang are five inches in diameter — slightly too big for the small yokes, while the large yokes were too big to sit comfortably in the coils.

Definitely the right tool for the job, but sadly not this particular job. Conventional wisdom says that setting the cam to run advanced will move the power band DOWN the rev range, and setting it retarded will move the power band UP the rev range. Instead, he described a few better uses for this adjustability. There are other methods of introducing adjustability.
