wood-moulding-bits-question Special router bit question. By IthacaDoc, June 14, in Power Tools. Share.  Basically, there is a V, a round cut, and then another V. I'll be using a router table and sapele wood. My question: is it better to make each cut individually (V-groove, then round nose, then V-groove) or to have a single bit made (which will probably cost at least $ but only require one or two passes)? I'm guessing the special bit would be a lot less complicated, and I'd be less likely to screw it up. I'd also welcome any constructive input you might have. Thanks very much!. Best procedures for cleaning mold-contaminated wood: This article offers advice on cleaning mold found on surfaces of un-finished wooden building materials such as framing lumber (rafters, floor joists, wall studs), and building roof, wall, and floor sheathing such as plywood, tongue-and groove pine boards, and other structural wood surfaces in buildings. Virginia asked: After hurricane Ike, we had to bleach and wash off the mildew from any salvageable wood items including cabinets and furniture. Well, I did that to some old kitchen cabinets and it looks like something kind of black is still on there. Is there anything that can be done short of sanding it off? Mildew is a type of mold that thrives in warm, moist environments.  Moisten a sponge with the solution and gently scrub the mold and mildew until it is gone. Avoid letting water set on the wood for too long as it may cause damage. If necessary, repeat several times, drying each time so that the wood does not become saturated and warped. I don't know if the cutters came from a Foley-Belsaw wood moulding bits question but it appears as though the gauge did see photo of instruction sheet Wood moulding bits question instruction sheet mentions planer blades so I don't know if uqestion cutters and the gauge are for the same piece of machinery. For God so loved the world that He gave. I finished milling all questjon the wood door frames using the same technique where I ran all the pieces with a shallow cut first and then a second pass to reach questin depth of the bead we wanted and each one of them was as clean a cut as one could hope for! Do not drink water out of this hose and wash hands after handling. Sears, I believe, must be clearing out their molding head cutter sets! That is a key element in this, knowing how to use them because, like any other power tool accessory, these things can take a nasty bite out of you if you don't watch what you're doing!

I bought this set for a very specific job kitchen cabinets for the wife and the cutter I needed was right there in the pack! I got this set home and immediately opened up the instructions and read through them thoroughly.

A set like this can be an extremely dangerous thing since you have to remove the blade guard and riving knives to use them. Essentially the bits are cutting profiles in larger pieces of wood so the usual safety devices cannot be in place. I have to tell you, the table saw makes a nice whirring sound when it runs but with the molding set in there that sound almost becomes sinister and is a great reminder to keep your hands clear of this bad boy at all times!

With the saw running and the blades just above the table top I ran the first scrap piece over the bead blade and a nice little bead was formed. Not changing anything but the blade hieght I ran the same piece back over the blade and there was a very nice, crisp single bead left in the wood.

Perfect, this is exactly what my wife wanted for her cabinet doors! I finished milling all of the wood door frames using the same technique where I ran all the pieces with a shallow cut first and then a second pass to reach the depth of the bead we wanted and each one of them was as clean a cut as one could hope for!

The wood, by the way was poplar so there wasn't too much wear and tear on the blades as demonstrated by the next round of cuts I did for a laundry room cabinet door. I have used a few of the other blades that came with the set and was able to make some really cool moldings for a couple of projects I have been working on and will certainly use them again for some upcoming projects I have.

For instance, I will by all means use them to create the moldings for our new pool cue rack that will feature some federal, or colonial styling to it. All in all this is a great addition to the table saw and the radial arm saw if your shop is so equipped! We have both and they both are just that much more versatile than ever before!

The greatest thing about this set is that I can still get other profile blades from Sears in order to complete other projects that the table saw could do just that much faster than a router.

Why sell an item without the possibility of blade replacement???? I bought mine Woodshop Precision Tools Router Bits a few years ago and am pleased with how it works, but now need new blades and Sears does not sell them!! Not only that Sears, I believe, must be clearing out their molding head cutter sets!? All in all this is a great addition to the table saw and the radial arm saw if your shop is so equipped!? We have both and they both are just that much more versatile than ever before!? Since I have found that both the single and tripble knife molding head tools to be extremely useful.

The Single head tool came with 17 different knives in its own case for easy storgae. Where end nailing is necessary, angle the nail so that it can be started farther away from the end, but the nail will still get a bite into the other board it is being nailed to.

Use the smallest diameter nail which will do the job, or hold the workpieces securely. Obviously, a 16d or 20d nail, with its larger diameter, will exert more force on the wood's grain, making the wood more likely to split. Pre-drill a hole slightly smaller than the nail's shank diameter.

Use wood with sufficient moisture if possible. Very dry wood is more likely to split, since the drier the wood is, the less flexible it will be.

Use softwoods where they are suitable for your purposes, rather than hardwoods. Avoid nailing through, or very near knots in the lumber. Knots are usually formed by heartwood , which is harder and less flexible than sapwood. Back any nail out if a crack begins to appear while driving it. A tiny crack is a sure indication the wood will split if you continue, possibly ruining a board if it is being used for trim work.

You may have to look at choosing another location for your nail, further from the end or edge of the board, or pre-drill a hole for a wood screw or other fastening method. What size nails diameter and length should I use for installing shoe moulding?

I would use ones that are small in diameter with small, rounded heads. Make sure they are long enough to grip into something solid after they've penetrated the shoe moulding and possibly drywall.

You want the penetration to be at least the thickness of your shoe moulding, but two times as much would be better. You can greatly reduce splitting with any nail by taking your hammer and flattening the pointed end with a few gentle strikes.

Then, rather than separating the wood fibers, you'll be punching them out in the shape of that nail which reduces the splitting. Yes No. Not Helpful 0 Helpful 2. Should I be concerned about wood splitting at a later date when using soft wood?

Not Helpful 1 Helpful 2. Hardwood is wood from broad-leaved temperate and tropical forest trees. Softwood is from gymnosperm trees such as conifers. Old-growth conifers like Southern Yellow Pine heartwood have a hardness scale similar to hardwoods.

Hardness scale is different than hardwood. Typically the shipping charge will be less than the actual cost to ship. All shipping labels will have the actual cost displayed.
