It took the longest to dry on the 1st day, as I had been told it would. After that the odor abated after a few hours. I am sorry you have a hypersensitivity to the odor. The above advice to air out the house is a good one. You might want to contact the makers of the product for any further suggestions. I did my upstairs floors in Waterlox, and the smell was so bad that my downstairs contractors stayed away from the house for days.

I found that it went away after about a month. It's pretty noxious stuff -- and according to the Waterlox company guy I spoke to, their low-VOC formulation has an even more pungent odor. A shame, because the look is gorgeous, but they really need to rethink their solvents; this comes up quite often as a concern and you're not alone. Get plenty of crossbreezes playing on the surface and consider a portable dehumidifier. Thanks you all for your comments, it's pretty discouraging and frightening going through this because you have no idea how long it's going to take and your so uncomfortable.

I'll follow all the advice above and pray. Thanks so much again. Setting up fans to blow across the surface after the Waterlox first hardens definitely helps. I also suggest waiting for each coat to dry thoroughly. Sometimes people re-coat too quickly, trapping solvent underneath the finish before it has had the chance to dry out, and the result is it takes MUCH longer to get rid of the smell.

Well to late for that now, I hope others read your message and take it into account. Thats probably why it's taking so long. Live and learn :. Ah that is what happened I bet. It says to let it dry all the way, especially the first coat which takes the very longest.

Then make sure the following coats are VERY thin. I bet that is why the smell only lasted hours for me. I am so sorry this has happened to you.

I am sorry that the threads were not available to you as there was a ton of info Hopefully others who use the product will read carefully and also ask here if they need more info. Some products are more noxious than others and avoiding exposure to the fumes is very important. We also all have different reactions and tolerance to the fumes. If your body is telling you that the fumes are not agreeing with you, then you should do your best to avoid them.

The flow of air is important in helping these kind of products cure. The instructions indicate a rather long curing time for Waterlox. Here is a link that might be useful: Waterlox Drying Instructions. I guess I should stop practically swimming in the stuff.

Its a very slow dry material which is waht gives it its great penetration and sealing qualities along with being able to redo it later. Didnt seem like a big problem to me You must be sensitive.

Hope it dries fast. It takes about a month with good ventilation for the smell to go away. Ideally you should finish in the garage and bring it in after a month : We did out floors with waterlox. The smell lingered for a month. Put a large exhaust fan, day and night, to exhaust the fumes. All said and done, the finish is unmatched in look!

That will knock you on your This lasts about 8 hours after application. Then the tung oil smell by itself, until it's cured. How do you know if your oil finish has gone rancid? Any thoughts? Angelo President Emeritus. Tung Oil Tung oil has a very distinct odor. I love the smell! From time to time I will recoat the handles of my tools so I can have the smell on my hands.

The odor brings me back to a time when I would make handles and sharpen all the tools for a now defunct turning supply company "Full Circle". However, don't let me be the judge, I think turpentine has a great smell too!

Reminds me of art school I agree with what Angelo said - a very distinct smell. That's the good thing about tung oil - you can always tell what it is! I use pure tung oil which I mix with a drier , and Tung Oil Smell 2020 straight or blended it has a slightly nutty and pleasant smell. My guess is you have a rancid batch. I think I would describe the stench that filled my shop more as "da stink" than "distinct". After reading Angelo's response I started wondering if I maybe had a bad nose day the other day.

I went out to the shop and took another sniff of the tung oil right in the bottle. It didnt' smell all that bad. I then took another piece of the wood that I used it on and when applied to that wood the worst odor imaginable filled the whole shop!!!! I'm not sure what the wood actually is since I salvaged it from a wood pile the other day. It looks like black acacia, but it smells more like some type of rosewood. The tung oil leaves a beautiful finish on it, but I think I'll be using it outdoors with any more of this wood.

Rob Wallace. Click to expand Rob - Thanks for the very informative response. It now appears that the objectionable smell is coming from some reaction between the tung oil and the natural oils in the wood that I was using it on.

The odor of each of the tung oil and the wood alone is not objectionable, but put the two together and whhhoooooo!!! The other day I had the bad smell on my hands and when I sniffed the bottle, I must have really been smelling my hands. Today the oil in the bottle smells fine. I've never experienced anything like this before, but I've learned that the exotic woods we find from time to time in South Florida can surprise you in a lot of different ways.

Siccatives of various types may add their odor as well. Then there's the solvent which is used to reduce the viscosity of the partially polymerized oil. Anyone who's been around certain nationalities knows nose? An aircraft full of Soviets returning from Cuba is a scent to remember. Even the "Morning" Utro perfume supplied by Aeroflot couldn't mask it. Mineral spirits is a blend of a lot of weights and forms of organic solvents, so that could certainly make a new and displeasing odor.

I'm not fond of the odor of tung, preferring linseed, but if you smell raw versus boiled linseed, you'll also notice a difference. David Somers. Ed, Be careful not to confuse Tung oil with the rarer and more expensive Tongue Oil. While I have never known Tongue Oil to go rancid, its "manufacture" can vary in quality affecting its odor.

Related drying oils include linseed , safflower , poppy , and soybean oils. Raw tung oil tends to dry to a fine, wrinkled finish; the English name for this is gas checking; this property was used to make wrinkle finishes, usually by adding excess cobalt drier. To stop this, the oil is heated to gas-proof it, and most oils used for coating are gas-proofed, also known as "boiled". The name is often used by paint and varnish manufacturers as a generic name for any wood-finishing product that contains the real tung oil or provides a finish that resembles the finish obtained with tung oil.

The tung oil tree originates in southern China and was cultivated there for tung oil, but the date of cultivation remains unknown. The major fatty acids in tung oil and their concentration are listed in the table. The primary constituent is a fatty acid with a chain of 18 linked carbon atoms or methylene units containing three conjugated double bonds.

They are especially sensitive to autoxidation , which encourages cross linking of neighbouring chains, hence hardening of the base resin. Tung oil is very popular today because of two properties: first, it is a naturally derived substance. The oil is often diluted with hydrocarbon thinner so its viscosity is very low and enables the oil to penetrate the finest grain woods. This thinning vehicle evaporates within 15 to 20 minutes. Tung oil resists water better than any other pure oil finish and does not darken noticeably with age.

It is claimed to be less susceptible to mould than linseed oil. Since tung oil has become popular as an environmentally friendly wood finish, some products labelled as "tung oil" are actually blends containing other oils, varnishes, solvents, or chemical driers, and may even contain no tung oil at all [12] Products labeled Danish oil may be tung oil or they may be polymerized linseed oil.

The product packaging will usually clearly state if it is pure tung oil. Most polymerized tung oils are sold mixed with mineral spirits to make them easier to work with. The oil-paper umbrella is the traditional umbrella used in China , Japan , and other countries in the sinosphere , and was brought to Western countries through the Silk Road.

Tung oil is the "oil" mentioned in the oil-paper umbrella, [ citation needed ] which is used to protect the paper from getting wet, and to make the umbrella waterproof. The traditional technique for applying pure tung oil is to dilute the oil with solvent, then apply a succession of very thin films with a soft, lint-free cloth such as tee-shirt cotton.

Dilutents range from traditional spirits of turpentine to any of the new citrus-based thinners to naphtha. The choice of thinner should be guided by how fast the coating needs to set. Naphtha works well in spray-on applications in well-ventilated studios.
