But one consideration is that there are no branches to this setup beyond reel hose and separator, whereas the traditional ducting setup probably has blast gates and tee connectors which can lessen the suction power.  With my original design I included the concrete in the base to combat this and just added it Best Small Shop Dust Collection 60 because I was curious how much it would do. Begin by assembling the unit — it is easy to build. The biggest challenge is cutting the holes in the lid. You can do this by using a degree angle.

To be safe with the DIY dust separator, first ground the container to reduce the chances of sparks caused by static electricity. This is our preferred option, and even though it is really cheap, it works really well. And there you have it, a very cheap and very effective homemade cyclone dust collector. This is especially good if you tend to work in one area because it will eliminate tangle.

This will prevent the liner from getting sucked up into the cyclone and prevent it from tearing. Instead of buying something to connect the hoses, you can cut the bottom of an empty one-pound coffee can and use it as a coupler. The can has rolled-steel edges, which are much stronger than the hose connectors you can buy in a store.

Here is a step-by-step process for making a blast gate. Go through the pile of dust that is left over after you work. It will sift out the larger pieces that can cause damage to the filter or the hose as well as any spare metal pieces that may have made their way into the pile.

Also, you go through PVC cement very quickly. It has two 6 x 4 wyes and a reducer at the bottom. I secured my blast gates with two screws and sealed the edges with silicone.

Originally I had planned on using double-sided tape to secure the floor sweep. It actually works just fine without so I may nix that idea. It had adhesive and predrilled holes for screws. Just make sure the screws are short enough not to damage the impeller fins. With a couple of screws a hose clamp and bunch of foil tape, I connected the flexible hose to the PVC.

I fired up the dust collector and listened at all the joints for air loss and found a couple of spots that needed some silicone. Otherwise, it was very tight.
