free-woodworking-cad-software-3d-model With woodworking CAD software you can cover woodworking projects from the most basic to intricate and expert designs. Two programs, DesignCAD and Design Institute stand out as leaders among the workers for its ease of use and best deal for the price. DesignCAD has recently become one of the most popular CAD woodworking design software packages available for the hobbyist and small shop woodworkers.  SketchUp (also known as Google Sketch) is well known for its user friendly and forgiving 3D modeling software. One reason is because they didn’t sacrifice functionality for the sake of usability when creating it. If you’re ready to be productive in less than a day, SketchUp is the right woodworking software program for you and best of all, it’s free to download. 3d Wood Models available for download. Free Wood 3d models are ready for lowpoly, rigged, animated, 3d printable, vr, ar or game. Available in most of files format including 3ds Max, Maya, Cinema 4d, Blender, Obj, Fbx. Professional woodworkers, designs, and amateur builders alike can take advantage of the above free software to aid in their design process. FreeCAD is still free woodworking cad software 3d model heavy development but it comes with a fully parametric design system and is able to create gcode as well as technical drawings. We did some models in Fusion and are missing the the possibility to create a cutlist. Fusion - Our Choice. AutoCAD has always been the go-to design application for commercial woodworking firms before other options came into existence. By trying out a free version of the more involved options, you can take advantage of the trial to see if the program meets your needs.

Overall it contains several objects that are positioned relative to one another. We will see that some CAD systems are better or worse in the assembly of several parts. An important question is if your software is able to create a parametric design.

If you design a table in a non-parametric software and decrease the size of the table top you have to manually adjust the table legs. In a parametric software the position of the legs will automatically be adjusted as they reference the edge of the table rather than an absolute length.

In the examples so far we looked at shapes that are square and based on precisely measured objects. You want to have a look at a different kind of software if you plan to get creative and work with organic, sculpted shapes. After creating a model we want to do something with it.

If you designed something for the CNC you want to create gcode that the CNC can execute to cut out the shape you designed. This is called CAM. For traditional furniture it is important to have a good drawing and ideally a cutlist that helps you to cut everything to the right dimension. There is however an important difference. This could however change every day. Other solutions are open source software where you do not only get a CAD system but also the source code — so to say the assembly instructions for the software and you will always be able to use it.

In the following picture you can find a quick overview of the strengths and weaknesses of the solutions:. It is similar to Illustrator so you can draw simple shapes but also get very artistic and design organic shapes — such as the patterns for the living cell table design. Besides templates Inkscape can also produce shapes for a a lasercutter or a CNC machine and it even includes a simple CAM solution that can create gcode.

The only disadvantage of Inkscape is that it is not parametric and not able to easily produce measured drawings. If measured 2d drawings and parametric design are important for you you might want to look at LibreCAD. However when a project requires a parametric 2d shape you can create it also in a 3d CAD program. The next software on our list is Blender. Blender is a super powerful 3D modeling and animation open source software.

You can create entire short films in Blender and we use Blender to edit our videos. Blender is a perfect solution if you want to sculpt a model or if you want to modify a file before 3D printing it. While it is excellent for creative modeling Blender is not parametric and while you can use it out of the box for traditional CAD work it is a bit cumbersome. While there are a few CAM addons for Blender none of them seems to be actively developed and maintained.

For a long time Sketchup was our go-to solution for 3D modeling. It is a great solution especially for complex assemblies with a lot of parts. Another great feature is that while the drawings are mediocre with an addon you can create a cutlist that is very handy for woodworking projects. We stopped using Sketchup for a couple of reasons:. First the vendor of Sketchup, Trimble, offers the new version only on the web — which means that they can limit the access easily — in contrast to the old version that would run forever on your local computer.

Secondly the ruby scripts such as the cutlist addon mentioned before no longer work in the web version. You can still add drawings but the lack of the cutlist addon is really bad news for all woodworkers. Thirdly Sketchup is not parametric and the free version is missing some critical features such as Boolean operations that make it very hard to use it for single shape 3D printing models or any sculpting work.

The same is by the way true for Onshape. Which brings us to the next solution on the list: Fusion Fusion is perfect and comes with all the features you ever wanted. It is parametric, has an easy user interface, allows for sculpting, creates CAM paths for your CNC and can create renderings as well as technical drawing.

Now you might argue that it is pure paranoia. Why would a respected company such as Autodesk offer a solution for free, build up a community, invest in the product just to discontinue it or charge money for it? The reason is pretty simple. They are driven by shareholder value. If you feel uncomfortable with putting all your eggs in one basket given that the rent for this basket might be a few hundred bucks going forward have a look at FreeCAD.

That means you can download and modify the source code of the software. Even if the website closes down you will always be able to use the software and adopt it to your needs. FreeCAD is still under heavy development but it comes with a fully parametric design system and is able to create gcode as well as technical drawings.

While FreeCAD was at the publishing of this article a bit clumsy when it comes to multipart assemblies a lot has changed and I published a post on FreeCAD for woodworkers and a detailed instruction on multi-part assemblies.

Unlike some other tool options we have on our list, Sketchup was designed just for woodworkers and their woodworking projects. Sketchup offers woodworkers the flexibility to start from a simple 2D drawing that will eventually create a 3D designs. The Sketchup software also features a myriad of tools you can use to simplify the design process and make it easier for beginners to create designs.

When you watch a few videos, you will learn this quickly. This Woodworking Design software caters to woodworkers and interior designers. This program helps you plan and visualize your woodworking ideas and has both 2D and 3D capabilities.

Our experts say Pro has a very strong 3D plan simulation with a very convenient rendering engine. If you like to build detailed designs, Pro has with all the gadgets and tools to realize your vision.

You might have to watch a few videos to get the hang of it. Pro does charge a fee for users, but before you take the plunge the software features an estimation tool that will show you the approximate cost of each design build. As the name suggests, this is a simple woodworking design software that is an excellent option for those who like simplicity and have no prior knowledge on how to operate CAD tools.

Easy Woodworking Design software will allow you to create your project with minimal hassle and training. The program features compatibility for both 2D and 3D designs. It also has basic design features that lets woodworkers estimate potential costs for a project and comes with a fairly intuitive editing tool.

It also supports cut lists, cut shelves, and angles to aid professionals and laymen with designing. Sketchlist 3D is a program designed just for woodworkers. Whether you want to build a 3D warehouse or small pieces of furniture, Sketchlist has the amenities you will need to put out good work.

You will find features that are less complicated than other programs and the dragging and dropping make it easier to realize your ideas. It even allows you to pick and choose your wood type for the most accurate design features and can emulate the drill holes to make sure your project will turn out the way you expect.

You can say that software is one of the woodworking tools you need for your project. Determine your skills and evaluate the amount of training you will require to work these programs.

This will allow you to get the most out of your purchase. Some available woodworking classes online can even provide you with deeper understanding on how these software and programs work. The most important part is the versatility of the program. Some of these woodworking design programs like Fusion and Sketchup as well as EZ Wood Project Designer have an affordable price than others. There are also few options that are free of charge!

Determine your budget as well, as you may need to shop for more professional options. There are those that cost nothing, some that just require a one-off payment, and others that come with a subscription service.

Woodworking is a rewarding craft that takes plenty of skill and patience to do right. Not only do you need quality tools and the proper experience on your side, but you also need an eye for design and detail that leads to an amazing end result. While you might think that woodworking is all about time spent in the shop, utilizing software can help you expand your horizons and push your abilities to the next level.

There are many good woodworking design software programs, but many of them come with a high cost. SketchUp makes the top of our list. This is a popular option, not only because it provides you with a good free platform for your woodworking designs, but also because the program has been around for quite a while. In essence, SketchUp is a drawing software that has a great user interface and a variety of features that help turn a design idea into reality.

Woodworkers can take advantage of all of the included features to design anything from a basic chair or table to elaborate wood creations that will stretch the boundaries of your imagination. The interactive design interface also gives you a virtual glance at your creations before you bring them to life. SketchUp has several versions available, including a free one for personal use.

While not as fully functional as the paid versions, the free option is still a great tool for woodworking design purposes.
